I haven’t watched an NBA game in years.

I wasn’t interested after Jordan/Bird/Ewing/TheDream all hung it up.

I was avid NBA fan beginning around mid 70’s (when the Finals were often carried tape-delayed after the 10pm news) on up through the golden era of Magic, Bird, Jordan and until the close of the Shaq-Kobe Lakers.

I catch highlights now and then but haven’t avidly followed for years now. Individually, the athletes of today are incredible but the game doesn’t seem as compelling anymore.

Teams used to have distinct personalities and rivalries were heated and epic. Just great stories.

Or….Im just old and have moved on to other things maybe.

No one enjoys watching NBA games - even the NBA fans. They’re far more interested in the soap opera and social media aspects: who’s dissing who, who’s pre-game drip was better, whose baby mama is stepping out with another player, etc.

I'm not sure I could name 20 current NBA players just from picking names up from Sportscenter highlights etc.

Yes. The only time I even consider watching it is during playoffs and that's if there isn't anything else to do.

not just NBA....the sport of basketball is unwatchable.

I had to suffer through the end of that seton hall/usc game tuesday night awaiting the college football playoff show. each team had 100 timeouts and 5 minutes of gametime literally took nearly an hour to pass. constant start and stop. commercial breaks. refs taking their sweet time reviewing every meaningless detail imaginable. touch fouls. just an awful experience.

quote:

With you on this. I've tried to watch it but it's not as entertaining as it was during mike, Larry and magic era. Players back then would play through injury and being sick. It was all about winning. Players now just want the most money and less time playing. Feel blessed I got to see the golden era of basketball.

We always remember the past in a different reality because we only remember the good parts of it. But I agree there was some fun ball back then. WGN had every Bulls game during their title years and it was fun to watch.

Not all players try to not play. Last night SGA had the flu and was questionable to start it was a game-time decision. He played and did this:

MJ’s infamous “Flu Game” stats:

44 minutes
38 points
7 rebounds
5 assists
3 steals
48% FG

Flu Game Shai tonight:

37 minutes
40 points
6 rebounds
6 assists
3 steals
63% FG

I think lots of posters who say they would never watch are the ones in almost every NBA thread all season long saying the same thing. They will go the whole season making tons of posts how they don’t watch. If a person doesn’t like it why do they keep posting about it.

For years fans complained only certain markets could win. And this was mostly true. It was reinforced when KD left small market OKC and about destroyed the franchise who got no value for him.

But their GM went to work and rebuilt the team over many years and then won a title. Little ole OKC. And the fans rewarded team by voting to build a $1b plus arena.

But ironically many people now hate that the small market team is winning and want the old days back where big market teams win.

I think its as good now as ever. There are some great rivalries building like OKC/Denver for one. The game last night Minn/OKC was physical and had some T’s and flagrant fouls passed out. The Boston game last night was pretty good too.

Someone mentioned they hated the woke stuff about NBA and forgot the NFL still has slogans in each endzone like “End Racism”. NBA has none of that. They did during the burn loot murder year when all sports even college football bent the knee. But the only current “woke” sport bending the knee is NFL not NBA.

The in-season NBA Cup started off as a joke. But now its noticeable that teams care. Its noticed in how hard they are playing in those games. It means nothing in the big scheme but it is adding harder play in games that may not have been played as hard before it.

Anyways to each their own. Watch it or don’t. My guess is if your team is in bottom you care way less and thats understandable it goes like that for every sport.

There are some great young players in the NBA. The Pels have a couple of them in Derik Queen & Jeremiah Fears. The T'Wolves played a rookie from last year a bunch last night in their match up vs. the defending champion OKC guys. OKC won 113-105.

Alabama scored over a hundred points the last two nights in the Players Era Tourney. There have been some special players in those games.

People are saying this coming draft will have 20 college players drafted in the 1st round. NIL is bringing the foreign guys over, so College Basketball is going to be great this year too.
Next year is going to be an even better NBA product.

I loved the NBA back in the 80s. The game and its players have changed, though.

The players are more arrogant. Prima Donnas. Just out there, it seems, to put on a show for the fans.
And the crowds at the games are mostly celebrities and the wealthy, just having a night out and looking to be seen.
Players are bigger and more athletic. 7 footers as point guards are shooting 3 pointers.
Its become a 3 point contest. No feeding the ball down low then back out if covered.
Yes, there is lots of traveling and ball carrying that the refs let go.
Lots of women involved. As refs, calling games, reporters, even coaches.
Games seem a lot longer. I know they aren't but who can sit for a whole game game? Turn it on with about 4 or 5 minutes to go.
The Season seems to go on forever. Causing star players to take nights off. Long playoff series. In season tournaments.
All the social justice stuff is off putting. As long as they divide and separate themselves nothing will get better.
The league is mostly for black players - and foreign players. There, I said it. Even the commercials during games are mostly black themed. And what happened overseas in the last 30 years that all these great players started coming fom foreign countries?

All that being said, I'm trying to get back into watching. Have barely watched it or followed it for the past 15 years or so. But I've always been a baskeball fan, even though my friend circle is not. There are a lot of younger players coming up that are really talented.

So we'll see how that goes.
