Insults don't give you a right to touch anyone, especially a participant touching a spectator, or vice versa.
That said, he took 2 steps and pushed the guy; it's not like he ran into the stands and beat the hell out of him.
I'll agree with Stephen A - 5 games.
T Tech can deal with the fan.

Looks like a thug, acts like a thug, can we blame the fan for calling him a thug?
I don't care what is said, a player should never initiate a physical altercation with a fan. Regardless of what was said, anyone who thinks the player is in anyway in the right has succumb to the thug mindset.

That sounds about right (and it's not the first time I've agreed with Smith).
If the guy racially abused Smart he should be banned for life.
Smart needs to have a bit more self-control though. It's just part of being an adult.

Too bad "fighting words" is a legal term.
And I'm a well educated non-hillbilly who doesn't resort to violence to resolve my issues.

quote:Yes it does. A threat can be made verbally. I am not saying that that is what happened, but it absolutely does matter what was said. In addition, the fan raised his hand to Smart. That can be interpreted as physically threatening. Nevertheless, the rule was followed appropriately as far as assessing the technical foul to the offending player. One rule that is not being enforced currently is that which prohibits the fans from using abusive language and behavior. It is clear that the fan did commit such an offense. I am anxious to see what is to be done about this.
If you go into the stands, you should be severely punished...5 game suspension minimum. It doesn't matter what was said to him.

Orr, if it is shown to have said something inappropriate, should be stripped of his privilege to attend games.

There it is.

The punishment is in place not just to be a deterrent, but because such action warrants punishment. The player should not want to do it because it is wrong. If you can't take fans heckling you, don't play sports.

We have plenty of evidence that this fan has acted inappropriately at games in the past. We have no evidence that the player has acted inappropriately during games in the past. Why, therefore, is the player not being given the benefit of the doubt?

You have plenty of evidence
When asked to share evidence, you respond to "do your own research"
Your response is stupidly frustrating
