Musgrove wasn’t really a “failed starter”. He was 24 at the time and had a very solid year in the rotation for Pittsburgh this year and is going to be the best part of that deal for Pittsburgh. Moran is probably ideally a platoon bat but still a major league level player. Sheffield is a nice prospect and will slot into their rotation this year but he’s basically the only piece of the deal.

Yankees gave up one good prospect for a pitcher that when healthy has some of the best stuff in the league. If they sign Machado and Corbin they will have an insane team if it stays healthy.

Musgrove had a 4.52 ERA in 171 innings? Prior to the deal.

I like Sheffield, I've been high on him for awhile and think he will turn out to be a stud. Mariners are getting a 22 year old who will end up being really good

Torres till Didi returns, Yankees may sign one of the old 2B available to play until Didi returns

and here I was thinking the Nats signing Kurt Suzuki was the big news of the day

Huge move for NYY and gets them the financial flexibility to go get Corbin and Machado or Harper (I know they've said they're out)

I could see them signing g another pitcher. I don't think Machado will get serious consideration being that he wants 32-40 million a year.

Sheffield is good but he’s got pretty limited upside and is probably a mid rotation type. That’s fine but Seattle basically traded Paxton straight up for him. They should have gotten more

Yeah regardless of whoever got the better deal it’s pretty obvious that the going rate for a pitcher like Cole and Paxton is less than what people initially thought before they were traded.

I’m not exactly sure what the reason for that is but from an outside perspective, it seems to make way more sense for teams competing to acquire pitching via trade than handing out big contracts to FA

Especially considering both are under team control

Yeah both players had 2 years remaining correct?

Someone to keep an eye on will be Carlos Carrasco. Just like Cole and Paxton he’s got 2 years of control left although he’s a bit older than them

Something like that

A guy mentioned in the DAT who I would love to deal for would be Robbie Ray. He’s got 2 years of arb control as well and would be perfect Keuchel replacement

I like Paxton more than Corbin.

Corbin’s velocity has dropped 2 MPH since 2013. That’s scary when you know he’ll be getting well over $20M in his mid 30s. Kind of weird to see a drop in velocity and huge jump in K rate.

I still think the Yankees need to go all out with Corbin and Machado.

Looks like the Mariners continue the longest playoff drought in sports with 18 straight years of no post season play.

Beltre made it official today and retired, thought he would play 1 more season. Would have been a great DH/1B pick up for some team

Beltre is likely 1st ballot HOF. His bust should be his angry face after Elvis Andrus fricks with his head.

I really wanted to see him get to 500 home runs, but I guess it is best he goes out on his terms rather than hanging on just to hit it.
