You want Alfonso Soriano?

I actually have this conversation a lot with my buddy who is a Cubs fan.

Soriano is having his best season since 2008, but it seems no one wants him. His defense has gotten better this year, and he's OPSing over .900.

I'm really surprised no one wants him.

His contract really scared everyone off even considering the Cubs are willing to pick up and big chunk and don't want much prospect wise back.

I'd love to have him hit 5th in the Pirates order and man LF.

But the contract, past defensive liability questions, and clubhouse cancer rumors seem to be scarring potential suitors away.

ETA:
quote:

With Soriano, the issue is – and has been – money. He has roughly $6 million left on this year’s contract, followed by $18 million in each of the next two seasons. The Cubs likely would need to include a substantial amount of money to facilitate a trade. On top of that, Soriano has a full no-trade clause. On the field, though, it’s been hard to ask for much more. Soriano is on pace for his best offensive season since 2008, while playing “at least average – and maybe even above average” defense in left field, according to one scout. The Dodgers, Giants, Indians and Pirates are among the teams that could benefit from Soriano’s power. But Soriano’s hefty contract would be a major complication in virtually every case.

Yea, I can't believe no AL team wants Soriano as a DH at least. It's a given that the Cubs will have to pay most of his remaining contract regardless.

Someone is going to give up a shite ton for Chase Headley who isn't half the offensive player Soriano is.

Headley fricking sucks. I don't see why all these teams are in on him. Sure, he's under control until 2014 and can play 3B/LF, but he's never hit over .300 and doesn't hit for much power. He has a good OBP, that's it.

Please, God, don't let the Pirates be the team that over pays for his mediocre arse.

Glad the Angels aren't in the market for a 3B. At least I hope not.

Callaspo might suck somewhat, but at least he isn't breaking the bank. We can (hopefully) wait until the offseason to make a move on a power hitting 3b.

I understand that, but it's not like he puts up all star numbers outside of Petco.

You can't be serious? Pretty soon you are going to be in Quidam territory.

Reasons why teams want him.

-Plays a premium position.
-Provides some pop and a little speed.
-Controllable til 2014.
-Does a very good job getting on base.
-His home vs. road splits throughout his career.

Those are 5 very key reasons why teams want him. If he sucks as bad as you say, there would be no market for him. Use a little common sense.

There's no reason why Chase Headley couldn't be a David Freese type player playing somewhere else full time. That's a solid baseball player.

I just picked him up in my fantasy league.

Its a keeper league so I am just taking a runner on him.

I also have Danny Hultzen stashed too. My team is terrible so I am stashing your players for next year.

Trout
Marte
Hultzen

Foundation for FBB success. Shame we have a 3 (or 4) year limit on how long you can keep a player. I just realized in my FFB league I can no longer keep Megatron...

I understand he's a good player.

He isn't worth what someone is going to have to give up to get him though is my point.

Still think the Astros are going to sign Bourn or Hamilton in the offseason?

Exciting time for us Pirates fans. I love me some Marte, excited to see how he does. Can't be any worse than Presley.

Ok. You understand he's a good player but...

You can see the difference in what you said as opposed to what you meant.

Yes... I do think they are possibilities to the Astros this off season. With that said, Bourn likes Atlanta and Atlanta loves Bourn. It'll be a hard sell but money talks.

I obviously don't think he sucks, but I don't think he's worth anywhere near his price tag prospect wise.

This is why I have a hard time taking anything you say seriously. If you, as an Astros fan, think they're going to lock big money in a long contract (4+ years) to any one player this offseason, I don't know what you're thinking. This teams is years away from competiting. JL is in the process of blowing the team up right now. You don't spend money to spend money. They'll be bad next year with or without Hamilton, so why get him if you're not ready to compete for the playoffs?

Common sense says do NOT sign a Hamilton or Bourn this offseason.

Your common sense:
We have tons of money. Hamilton and Bourn are good players. Let's sign one of these players.

You don't take into account the franchise's current state.

That was explained an taken to account as well. Like I said in that thread, your comprehension skills are lacking. I think you might have dyslexia.
