1. maybe
2. meh
3. not a abbreviation
4. should have stopped at two

Well in my experience abroad. People in England and India knew MIT and NYU.

BYU - In Malaysia they knew it. Never underestimate the reach of the church. They send missionaries all over the world.

What other abbreviation does the University of California go by? To say it's not an abbreviation means you think they don't have one.

In fact, look it up. The official abbreviation for that University is Cal.

I think more people would know #3 by Berkeley rather than Cal.

Not exactly an abbreviation but I bet there's a lot of people globally who know what West Point is.

i have friends from california that say cal-davis cal-berkeley.. sorta a yuppie thing. But i get your point..

and if you really think that Cal is in the top four you have automatically lost any credit ability in debating so

You assume that most of the world cares about American football. That's primarily what we're known for. Globally, academics is valued by everyone. Thus, the recognition of MIT.

Most people really only call Berkeley "Cal" when referring to the sports teams.

Not really. I've found a good many schools / fan bases in this area that use "USC" to describe us.

And if anything I don't makes it any less famous. If anything that adds to its usage thus makes it a more famous abbreviation.

The OP didn't say most famous / well-known school that uses an abbreviation a bunch.

In academic circles, its only Berkeley. I actually thought for a long time that Cal and Berkeley were 2 different schools.

And most posters use USCe when referring to South Carolina, not USC.

Most posters on here. But peruse any Gamecock opponents message board the week of the game and you'll see plenty of people referring us simply as "USC" and sometimes USCjr but that is more used as a derogatory manner rather than just trying to make sure people don't get confused between S.Car and So.Cal.

I've heard that Sam Houston State used to be called Sam Houston Institute of Technology. They changed the name for obvious reasons...
