You'd probably be right. The interesting thing about the topic is to try to gauge what people recognize who are neither college sports fans nor have spent time in academic settings.
I went to graduate school at UCSD and outside of the west coast and anyone in academics not many people recognize the acronym without at least thinking about it for a second. Of course, much of that is not having high profile sports but it makes me wonder about how well known any school is known to a large part of the population in other parts of the country.

gotta be LSU. Many times you hear Southern Cal, but you never hear anyone say "I think Louisiana State will be good this season"
