A great athlete but not a great American.

He was a TRUE American... He had balls. Segregation of public facilities yet he had to go risk his life for that? No way, Ali was great.

Obviously the Navajo code talkers shouldn't be celebrated, since they risked their lives for a bunch of racist palefaces

And frick that dumbass Ira Hayes, raising a flag that has sponsored so many terrorist acts against his indigenous brothers and other people of color

We have lost the greatest sports figure ever. The distance between Ali and whom ever you want to put 2nd is large.

Anyone who argues the contrary is not informed(nice way of putting it)

Question, will there ever be a close Athlete-Reporter relationship like Cosell and Ali again?

Great boxer, draft dodger, Muslim, and many of his fights were rigged.

That being said RIP.

He didn't dodge the draft. He was drafted, refused to go to war, and suffered the consequences without dodging anything. Majority of America didn't even agree with that war and treated the Soldiers like shite anyways.

I'm not sure what him being a Muslim has to do with anything.

In case it was not mentioned, ESPN 2 is showing his 'greatest fights' right now. GOOD. STUFF.

Good excerpt why he didn't go to the Military:

"Shoot them for what?" Ali asked in an interview after he refused induction. "They never called me ****. They never lynched me. They never put dogs on me. They didn't rob me of my nationality, rape and kill my mother and father. What do I want to shoot them for, for what? Why do I want to go shoot them, poor little people and babies and children and women? How can I shoot them? Just take me to jail."

I guess the family requested the all black color guard for a coward who wouldn't defend the flag they hold.
