The difference between a 5 and 12 isn't very big. It never is.

Eh, I just think there is a lot of parity between the top handful and the bottom autobids. And it's hard to seed without a lot of common opponents and comparable schedules.

I think it's more the fact the 20th and 45th best teams overall aren't that far apart.

Exactly. You've got 350 different teams playing vastly different schedules, and the 'common opponent' games mostly happen in November and December, long before these teams figure themselves out.
That's why they play this big tournament to settle it.
