The way the NYI Islanders Tavares’ deal went down could be a blueprint the Jackets’ organization will want to avoid with Panarin.

Jackets aren’t helping themselves out by failing to improve the roster.

I've got some great John Tortorella material fresh from The Athletic's Aaron Portzline.

This is in regards to Jack Johnson.

quote:

“I don’t think he had a bad year,” Rutherford told reporters in Pittsburgh. “He was a healthy scratch at the end of the season. I know the reason why. It wasn’t because of how he was playing.” Those comments irritated Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen, who said he’d be calling Rutherford for an explanation in coming days. But they infuriated Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella, who wanted to vent.

“All I know is, this organization, from the lawyers, the front office, J.D. (John Davidson), the managers, the coaches, players … has done nothing but try to help Jack,” Tortorella told The Athletic. “And for him to backhand slap us like this is utter bullshite, and he should know better. “No one wishes anything bad to happen to him and his family. We wish him the best. But for him to put it the way he put it today is bullshite. And to have a general manager question our decision-making from three hours away, he must be a fricking magician.”

More Tortorella gold...
quote:

“But you get an arrogant couple of guys, an arrogant guy … I don’t want to go to name-calling, cause I know Jimmy. He’s a good man. They’re both good people. But what the frick are they doing? Get on with your business! I hope (Johnson) plays his arse off for ’em, but stay the frick out of our business when you don’t know what’s going on.”

This is probably my favorite "The Athletic" article to date.

I liked Jack a lot for most of his time here, but it's our pleasure giving you a 31-year-old defenseman who couldn't crack our lineup for five years at more than $3 million.

I was really concerned about how our day was going until the Riley Nash news. Think that's a really good signing.

Yeah, I love the fit. Pens have this really great habit of taking defensemen for their style and seeing them surge. Just kind of what the Pens do.

Matt Niskanan, Justin Schultz, Jamie Oleksiak to name a few that couldn't crack rosters and were traded to the Pens for peanuts.

JJ will be a stud, zero doubt about it, hence the contract from the best GM in the NHL and immediate pounce to lock him up the night before.

1) All those guys were in their early-mid-20s when acquired. There was reason to believe they could/would improve. Johnson's 31. He probably won't.

2) Even if Johnson has a year or two of improvement/reversion, he's still 31 and signed until he's 36.

3) You should probably read this Twitter thread. Lots of good points as to why this signing should be problematic for the Pens/different than past reclamation projects ( Oleksiak and Schultz are specifically mentioned).

Again, I get Tortz is mad, but mediocre coach gonna mediocre coach. He can make even your best D man for multiple years look bad and get in his "dog house". It will eventually get him ran out of another town before long as well.

Can't wait for JJ to wreck shop on the 3rd pairing and easing some minutes off Letang as planned. Great fit.

JJ being one of our best D-men in 2013 has nothing to do with him being our seventh-best D-man in 2018 (and being scratched accordingly) or how he will play in 2023.

JJ being on a good team for once however, does.

JJ was on the Kings. They traded him and followed by immediately winning two Cups in three years. And that was when he was better and younger than now (though he also had bad advanced stats with LAK, despite them being a really good team, as he has for most of his career).

He is a good player, that will probably be great under the Pens, because that is just what the Pens do and he is a great fit. Nothing beyond that really matters.

He's not a good player anymore though. That's the point. And he's 31 and signed for five years.

Matt Hunwick was not a great player for the Pens. That's a much better comparison age-wise than Oleksiak/Schultz/Niskanen.
