He's not a good player anymore though. That's the point.

Says who? Some butthurt CBJ fan coming from a bad team with a losing culture and bad head coach?

It's a 3rd line defenseman signing, why do you guys care so much? Because Tortz lost it to the media again? Should be used to that by now.

Also, Ron Hainsey is a much better comparison. But that wouldn't fit your age narrative that makes no sense.

You just signed a 31-year-old to a five-year deal at over $3 million/yr who couldn't crack the lineup on a bad team with a losing culture. If he was a good player he wouldn't be a healthy scratch on a bad team with a losing culture.

Stay salty and clueless, the classic CBJ fan staple.

Hainsey was a rental not signed for five years. And he wasn't a healthy scratch on his bad team with a losing culture like JJ was.

You really should educate yourself by reading that Twitter thread from a Pittsburgh reporter. He's not a fan of a bad team with a losing culture so you can trust he knows what he's talking about, unlike fans of bad teams with losing cultures who can't possibly be knowledgeable. Otherwise they would cheer for a good team with a winning culture.

You should really educate yourself on hockey and not rely on random twitter people. I can see why CBJ loses so much if your fan base represents your front office.

Thompson also headed to Sabres in that deal. I thought after Bozak signed the O’Reilly deal was off.

I'll just conclude by saying I'm happy for JJ after what he went through with his parents. He truly embraced the franchise after he was traded back when it actually was a bad team with a losing culture. He should be set for life now even with the bankruptcy which is wonderful.

That was some crazy stuff. But yeah, I agree that its nice he can get one last contract after all of the problems he's had with his family. He's lucky to get a contract, as he's coming off an Age 31 season in which he was benched in the playoffs and he scored just 3-8-11, his worst season since he was a rookie. He's in obvious decline and, well, he was never that great to begin with. But I'm glad he doesn't walk away from the game with nothing.

But look at the Leafs reeling in the big fish. Every year, we hear how this guy loves Toronto and he's gonna sign.. only to go elsewhere. Well, the wait is over. Tavares is the real deal and the Leafs are loaded up front.

Now, about that defense....

Yeah, that's been a take in the advanced stats/analytics community for a long time: that he was never good to begin with (or at the least, pretty significantly overrated), even in the early 2010s. I still think he's had value as a physical, athletic puck-mover who can chip in offensively and is good in the locker room. I think he still could be that with the Pens. I don't think he's horrific. I just think he's no longer worth $3 million, particularly for five years, based on his recent stats (regular and advanced), the eye test from this past year, and his age. Regardless, it was a pretty innocuous comment by me starting off and I wasn't expecting to get into a page-long debate about it, particularly since I actually don't care/preferred that he's moving on (unlike Cole) so sorry if Hog and myself hijacked the thread for awhile.

I assume TOR will try to move Nylander or Marner for a really good D. That or try to win 5-4 every night.

Also, similarly to my thoughts on JJ, I imagine Baloo you're happy Beagle's getting himself a nice payday.

I might have a post later tonight more specifically on CBJ. Would be curious to hear your thoughts on the Caps moving forward this upcoming season.

Yeah, physical crease defenders are, by their very nature, going to be underrated by the analytic community. I don't think he was terrible as the hardcore types would insist, just that he never was anything special. People wanted him always to be more than he was due to his size, and its not his fault he never became Bobby Orr. He was a classic failed hyped prospect who became underrated by the very people who hyped him, mad that he didn't live up to his loftiest projections. But he was never a great player, and he's clearly been getting worse the last two years as his numbers have fallen off a cliff. His last two seasons combined would provide less scoring than one of his peak years.

There will be worse contracts given out, but its hard to see this one working out. I hope it doesn't because... Penguins. but Johnson always struck me as a decent dude. I'm not rooting against him or anything. Glad he got a soft landing.

Leafs have defensive help coming in the form of three Swedish defencemen...I saw real improvement from Nikita Z and generally I’m hopeful that my boy Morgan Reilly continues moving in the right direction...I’m interested in hearing what we could get for a Marner Nylander though...as I’ve been saying we are two top four defencemen away from seriously fricking this league up...

The Athletic is saying Dallas is a front runner to obtain Erik Karlsson from the Senators and won't have to take on Bobby Ryan.

Don't know how I feel because he is one of the, if not the best and we would need to hammer out an extension before a deal got done, not to mention we have to get an extension to Seguin as well. Taking on Ryan's salary would be a deal breaker so that's nice

So the Sabres wanted the highly touted thompson(center) from the Blues, instead of tage, so to get the deal done with tage, they gave ROR the 7.5million signing bonus?

Personally, they stole ROR, for 2 salary dumps and a kid who's 2 frail to be a top6.

Sounds like Leafs have made a shite load of calls for a Dman, including an interest in Parayako

We would fall back to the irrelevancy we were at leading up to acquiring Seguin
