eh, i wouldn't give up a prospect in that scenario (eating a chunk of panda's K while taking on all of sheilds). Then again, i think shields decline continues quickly.

No he is not

Giants gave 30 year old Cueto 130m over 6 years
O's gave 30 year old Davis 161m over 7 years
Marlins gave 30 year old Chen 80m over 5 years
Arizona gave 32 year old Greinke 206m over 6 years
Royals gave 32 Gordon a 4 year deal and 31 year old Kennedy a 5 year deal worth 72m and 70m
Boston gave 30 year old Price 207m over 7 years

He was better in the 2nd half last year and he still strikes out a batter per inning.

and walks more and gives up more home runs...in san diego, than any point in his career. If i'm an al east team i'm not jumping at that contract and those numbers.

Also, and this is just for fun, so don't take it the wrong way, but do you get a cut of the deal if shields is traded? You tried pushing that bad contract on the cubs last year too.

The players would probably strike for eternity if owners took a hard line on contracts guaranteed

He has had success in the AL (particularly in the East) and if it afford me the chance to get someone who will help me vs hurt me I take it. Home runs are fluky really and last year he gave up a ton it wasn't even a career high (gave up 34 in 2010)
I think he can cut those down and his ERA drops, he will never be an ace again but he is a solid option. His walk rate went up but I am not as concerned about that either, last years Padre team was horrible offensively and defensively.

1 more walk per 9, declining velocity, 10 more home runs than the previous year, going from al to nl and pitching in that park doesn't scare you? I can see your point, he's had success in that division before, but no way i'd eat a lot of panda's take on all of his, and give up a prospect.

no because those are fluky, he has given up 30+ before but it isn't a trend yet.

His K per 9 went almost 2
His fastball velocity didn't decline too bad, but that doesn't worry me because his 2014 fastball velocity was also the HIGHEST it had ever been, 2011 his best season his fastball was 90.9.

I really think last year was bad luck and playing with one of the worst defensive teams in baseball.

They need to start putting fitness clauses in these baseball contracts. Some of these players get lazy as frick.

while normally i'd bang this drum with you (it's why i've said travis wood for the cubs shouldn't be a starter because his was lower than it should've been), but i dont' think you can completely discount it...especially since more came at petco than on the road.

Guy is getting old...i think last year was a sign of things to come, and to avoid just turning this into is he good or isn't he, frame it in light of eating a lot of panda's, taking on all of his, and including a prospect seems liek too much, even if you think last year was fluky

Ive no doubt he could be serviceable, maybe even to the end of that contract, but i wouldn't target him.

I think the Red Sox knew good and well what they would be dealing with. It's their fault as much as Sandoval's. I don't understand how he can be such a piece of shite to let himself get so overweight that he can't even play his position.

This is on Boston. They obviously knew Sandoval has been fat his whole career and it was bound to catch up to him.

Boston won't put all their trust in Shaw (see Wil Middlebrooks). Sandoval can still play 1B and DH if need be, plus he switch hits. If he buys into his role and Shaw continues to hit, the Sox will be all the better for it, money nonwithstanding

$60 mil this year tied up in 3 terrible players. Porcello, Fat Sandoval, and Hanley… my Lord. Think of what kind of pitchers you could have for that kind of cash.

This is all on Henry and ownership, I think they pressured Cherington to make splash moves b/c NESN ratings were down. It's early similar to Theo's last year and the Carl Crawford/Gonzalez deals.

Good job Boston coaches. I wish more teams had the balls to do this. Quite a few $20M turds starting in the league above better talent.

Farrell is in a make or break year. If they suck, he's out.
