Rose had 2 restaurants/sports bars in Palm Beach County a while ago and used to hang out there quite a bit. I knew several guys who ran into him. The best one of them had to say was that he was a foul-mouthed meathead. The others said he was an unmitigated a-hole.
If Pete really wanted to be in the Hall, he knew what to do. He didn't.

Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench and Mike Schmidt went to see him decades ago with a message from MLB that to have any chance of getting back in good graces, he had to stop gambling, period, for the rest of his life. He told them to frick off.

Believe it was a SI article years ago that told how he got caught. Someone in the Reds accounting office noticed the telephone bill for the Reds clubhouse house was extremely high for several months. Thought it was a mistake until the accounting folks asked for the phone records. Then the went downhill for Pete. So said SI

Baseball HOF is a sham without him.

Who cares? It’s not the hall of humanity. If it was a career .200 hitter that raised millions for charities would be voted in.
Pete was a moron, but also a HoF baseball player. If you have a kid that plays the game like he did you’d be damn proud.

And this is the saddest thing of all. Back in 1989, Pete could have made this go away with a one-year suspension, One year. He could have been back managing the Reds at the tail end of 1990. And his plaque would have been hanging on the wall in Cooperstown for 30 years.
All he had to do was admit what he did. Just come clean.
But he was thinking like an athlete, not rationally … the same kind of competitiveness that made people here and elsewhere love him so much … and he thought he could hustle and beat this just like taking an extra base and sliding headfirst into third.
He couldn’t.

Stop talking out of your arse…I’ve met Bench many times and he comes off as the bitter Ahole.
ok thanks for the input.
im sure it's a total coincidence that everyone else on the planet that has spent any time with either of them all hate pete rose and everyone loves johnny bench.

Yep. The only one to blame for Pete not being in Cooperstown is Pete.

Great player, one of the best all time. Shouldn't have bet on baseball.
I agree. But the sentence doesn’t fit the crime. The man was an all time great that deserves to be in the HOF and it isn’t even a debate.
He has more than paid his due for that crime

Now he’ll get voted in
Yes, the self-important, grandstanding, douches that run the HoF will probably vote him in a few years now that he's dead. They'll present it as an act of graciousness when in reality it's one last insult to him.
His family should call them out and decline if they do.

No writers would vote on Rose for the HoF. That ship sailed in the George H.W. Bush administration. It would have to be one of the veterans committees, and as noted Johnny Bench serves on the one in question and as long as he’s alive it ain’t happening and IMO it will never happen.
I don’t think Rose was ever on a writers ballot, the people who run the hall have made it clear they don’t want ineligible players to be considered for their wall.

So is Johnny Bench.
So is Mike Schmidt.
So was Ty Cobb.
So was Ted Williams.
Hell of a red herring here.
