Or why were people standing in it?
That's really the only thing that gets to me.

have you ever seen a rake in a bunker during a tour event??
Yes. Many times.

Does the PGA really want to go this route of adding HAZARDS to a course over the 4 days of the tournament?? Wow.
Im sure it happens more often than we know. And im sure they had to let the players know.

People were standing in it. Lol at that bring a bunker.

I would be shocked if that was true.
I would think all of the beach area would be marked as a lateral

What the rules officials are saying is that an area on the course that has now turned into sand due to gallery traffic has now become a bunker??
No, man, that was a bunker. The CBS shotlink thing even had his ball in a bunker after he hit his tee shot. You could see the lip off to the right as you were facing the green when Feherty went back out there.
I caught the tail end of them saying that Stuart Appleby lost 4 strokes because of something similar back in '04. It'll be interesting to see what the PGA does with the galleries when this tourney goes back there in 2015, and for the Ryder Cup in 2020.

The tour is NOT saying any sand is a bunker. THAT WAS A BUNKER decause it was designed and constructed as one by the architect.
Rules are rules. It's part of what sets golf apart.
Bad break but correct ruling.

Wait, what?
The PGA said in the local rules to be aware of bunkers outside of the ropes. A 2x2 area of trampled down dirt/sand is not a bunker.

So there could be grass there on day 1 and now its a trap on day 4?

That was a bunker. Even had a lip .. The only problem was that there were people in it and you could not see it..
Tough ruling but I agree with the decision.

I actually said to my wife when they originally showed him about to hit the shot that it looked like he was standing in a bunker. I should do commentary instead of all these Euro fricks.

Bc like 1/3 of all the land on the course is technically a bunker. The crowd would have nowhere to walk if they werent allowed to walk in bunkers 40 yards off the fairway. Its just the nature of the course.

Tied up going to 18...great stuff here.

It looked like the right and back sides might have been a little more clearly defined. As Feherty said it was probably more clearly defined on Thursday than today. That and DJ had a very large gallery that made if more difficult to determine if it was a bunker.

I feel extremely bad for DJ.
But like i've said, it could have easily been prevented.

There's sand under that grass. Can't ground his club.
