Roy Halladay appeared to be hot doggin' it in his plane in the moments before his crash -- making extreme and unusual changes in altitude ... this according to multiple witnesses. TMZ Sports has obtained footage shot by boaters who say the ex-MLB star's plane was going from 100 feet in the air down to 5 feet and then back up again ... repeatedly. The boaters were so shocked by the flying pattern, they pulled out their cell phones to capture the bizarre dips and rises.

It looked like very shallow water

I found it odd not one person jumped in the water to see if he was alive

They were top busy filming it so they could sell it to TMZ later

I would guess that he had crash similar to the one that killed the two employees a few months back. They were flying low and ran out of room, yanked up hard and stalled. Low level flying with abrupt altitude changes can often lead to a stall. The airplane is billed as somewhat stall "resistant" and "controllable" during a stall which just isnt a realistic claim. A stalled wing falls. It may fall in a more predictable manner but it does fall and there is little to no control prior to the wing regaining lift.

Moments later, the plane crashed into the Gulf of Mexico -- and the boat full of witnesses raced over to the crash scene to see if they could help. Once they arrived, it was clear the pilot was dead.

i just found the TMZ video where the guys are coming up to the plane. The water is super shallow...they were going in with a flats boat and I think they had to trim up to get in, so even if he survived the impact there was no way for him to get out. That plane was really torn up.

That video and witness testimony might be what keeps the company in business.

I thought one of the guys in the second video on TMZ could see him. You would think in that shallow of water you'd at least get to him and turn him over but the article said "Once they arrived, it was clear the pilot was dead. "

With the altitude changes he was making, its possible that he straight up went head first into 2 feet(or less) of water.
He was probably really messed up.

You could see him banking pretty hard on some of those turns before diving down toward the water...he may have lost a little more lift than he anticipated on one of those turns and that was that.

He was DOA on impact. The body was laying right there beside the fuselage. He was wearing a purple shirt. You can even see him in some of the aerial videos. Shame, if he had just been flying responsibly he would still be here. You never ever hotdog it 10 feet above the surface unless you are an experienced pilot, which he was not.

from a pilot
quote:
So this plane was kept right down the road from me on Davis Island. This guy was constantly buzzing boats and flying extremely close to the water even in very bad winds and rough seas. This will undoubtedly be pilot error. Every time I saw this plane fly it was always under 100 feet. Not one time was it being flown responsibly.

What are the odds he was blasting Danger Zone when he crashed?

We can only hope. I will never blame anyone for feeling the need for speed.

To be fair, based on how the plane is marketed, I'm not sure if anyone really flies it responsibly. It's like being a responsible Donzi boat owner. Those people don't usually exist.

Anyone have the flight pattern or route or whatever? I'm trying to figure out if he would have passed within eyesight of me or not.
