So, What Happens When One College Team Wants to Make a Trade With Another?

It’s inevitable, right?
Is there anything that prevents it now?

I think this is the tip of the iceberg.
I think this is the year some smart player or agent challenges eligibility rules. Why would any system QB in college making $3 MM+ want to subject themselves to the draft? And what possible court would rule in favor of NCAA eligibility rules if the players are being paid by the schools? The restrictions will be found to be ageist and violate labor laws.
The NCAA needs to figure out how to enforce contracts so there’s not wholesale free agency every year that burns out the fanbases.

The players. They’d have to want to. And then there’s the school timeline. Hard to make a trade in October or November halfway through the semester.

Why?
Pro leagues trade players all that time that don’t, necessarily, want to be.

Thos nfl players have already agreed to that arrangement via the cba. College players have not.

Pro leagues have a CBA that the players’ unions signed off on that included trade protocols. And since all the court rulings have gone in favor of the players, it just seems really unlikely a trade could be enforced. Also, not a great recruiting strategy.
There may eventually be trades, but it will take the players unionizing 1st. And I don’t see any motivation for them to do that currently.

I get what you're saying...but are we sure about that? Couldn't the argument be made that they do?
I know it's not a draft, but couldn't the argument be made that once the player signs on recruiting day, then the school owns the rights to that player?

Didn't they try years ago?

Understood.
Gotta figure out a way around the CBA.
I want carnage. I want to be entertained all year long by this debacle!

No, everyone is still pretending these guys are there for school and the school calendar dictates timing

I feel like euro style transfer system will be best honestly with no draft or prospect system to pull from
Posted on 1/10/26 at 2:19 pm to RummelTiger
The players would have to agree on it

“Burning out the fanbases”? What are you talking about? For every fan who is pissed his team lost a player there is another fan thrilled to have him.
Indiana just did a SEC takeover of Mercedes Benz. Remember when SEC fanbases would brag about that kind of stupid stuff as if it enhances their manhood.
College football is going to be more popular than ever with more fanbases finding success for the first or second time. Sure, it will be at the expense of fanbases who take 9 win seasons for granted but so what.
This sport became way too top heavy because the NCAA turned a blind eye to cheating. Now, it’s leveled and times are a changing and the popularity will take off. If Bama, UGA, and Ohio State fans can’t handle new competition then they can “stop watching” as has been posted h7ndreds of times around here over the past year.

Right now the players have the power, not the schools.

They are STUDENT athletes. How would trades work if the education they get isnt what they want?
