His career stats are absolutely horrific by today's standards and even IMHO average to mediocre in the context of his era in which defenses were given much more lee-way in every aspect than today.
But he was able to parlay one game into an iconic moment and it was a New York team so it was even that much more magnified.
I'd say you have a very good argument.
