or the runner up from the championship game

Nope, they get the next highest ranked team in the CFP rankings. Now, that will probably be the CG loser the majority of the time, but not always. Hell, had LSU not lost the 7OT game last year, there was a chance they would have been ranked ahead of Georgia at the end and gone Sugar instead of Fiesta

The committee ranking determines who the runner ups are but I get that it's not their fault. How ever you want to slice it there should be more leeway to make better matchups.

The SEC/Big 12 tie-in is KILLING the Sugar Bowl.

Should have been Baylor/Memphis in the Cotton Bowl, and Georgia/Penn State in the Sugar Bowl

It's what happens when the playoff committee makes the shitty arse match ups.

This is the Sugar Bowl's own fault.

The Sugar Bowl has visions of Texas or Oklahoma being in the consistently that’s why they made the deal.

You know Baylor is a pretty Baptist school and Waconis pretty conservative.

I'd imagine their fans may be wary of NO and its reputation.
UGA's fanbase is also Baptist and conservative. Tons of Baylor fans in NO. Like UGA they work hard and play hard.

This.

Might be better to have a plus-one or the playoff after the bowls. Then the top teams are still playing for something.

Yep. They've got an inflated sense of self. Winning in that half-assed SEC East has them thinking they're actually a big time program.

Why can’t we just accept that non playoff games don’t mean anything. Then it will be a lot easier to just enjoy football during two weeks in December when there isn’t a whole lot going on.

A two point game under 4 minutes isn’t any less fun to watch because isn’t a playoff game.

Silly matchup. No one cares about seeing Baylor.

They are weeding out the fair-weather fan form the true fan. Even if your team is not in the playoff, a bowl is the last time of the year to watch them play, plus it's generally against a rare opponent. If fans can't be interested in that, they suck!

In the past, besides the separate bowls hosting #1 and #2, the other bowls didn't really mean anything.

From the way people talk about it now you would think every bowl game had some importance before the playoff.

Bowl games are a reward for the players and a time when the fan base can travel and enjoy the team they support cap their seasons. This is still true. For some reason because of the success the sec has had its fans seem to find it bothersome unless they are playing for a national championship even though Alabama is the only team to win one in the playoff era.

Big 10 was too coward to play the SEC.

Agree. I'll watch if a team I like is in a bowl.

Problem with the Sugar Bowl is UGA and Baylor are coming off losses that knocked them.out of playoff contention. So the fans see the game as a disappointment instead of being happy to be there.

Compare that to the Sugar Bowl against Illinois. We weren't expecting a natty that year so it was a great finish to a fun season.

This! Should never have paired up with the Big 12. If it’s not Texas or OU, SEC fans won’t be excited... even though Baylor is top 10. UGA-Penn St would have drawn a lot more interest
