I think he was referring to OP's friends. Sommeliers can taste the difference and name the grape and region or they fail as you said.
I submit that I can differentiate between $15 wine and well-regarded wines that are higher in costs. Can I describe the flavors, not really. It's how busy the wine feels and tastes.

Exactly. My sibling has lived in and around Austin for 35 years and when I visit I tool around there. It's nice, but just a day or two thing. I've done the wineries, they are fine. I like the German food in Fredricksburg, but I'm not going to recommend any of it highly.
