completely and totally different. The twin towers were the image from 9/11

The superdome is the main image from Katrina. Katrina is inseparable from it

The levee would be comparable to tower 6

The image of the dome with the roof off makes everyone think Katrina, not Superdome.

when I see a picture of the twin towers, or see it in an old movie, I think 9/11 (as would almost every American). That is what makes it so recognizable

This thread is now ridiculous. Comparing Katrina to 9/11, I'm out.

sorry you are a mental midget.

He said that 1 event can't make something recognizable. 9/11 is a completely valid response to that.

I never once said that Katrina and 9/11 were similar events. They were both, however, HUGE national stories that were on every news outlet for weeks and months

Im telling you as an unbiased, ignorant Yankee that people don't recognize domes. If you lined up 5 similar looking domes, you'd get random answers from sports enthusiasts, let alone general public.

not to be crass or slight the victims at all, but Katrina is out of most peoples minds across the country, and the image of the superdome isn't even close to embedded in peoples minds.

Just my ignorant, Yankee, two cents.

Why do people keep saying MSG? There's nothing recognizable about it at all from the outside.

Even as a Saints fan, the Superdome isn't on this list much less #1. Sorry.

Cowboys Stadium shouldn't be in that list

Name something more recognizable to the average American. Fenway maybe? That's about it. Most stadiums are pretty generic to the average person.

Yep.

Again, some people (not even half the population in my opinion) would recognize the name "Superdome" but couldn't tell you where it it's located.

yahoo article

At first glance, it’s an oddity more than a marvel, which is maybe why, despite all the evidence in its favor, no one’s really noticed that over the last 30-plus years the Superdome has become the most historically significant sporting venue in America.

quote:

The Superdome is a big part of the attraction. Since 2006 alone, the dome has had a fiscal impact of $4.1 billion on the Louisiana economy, according to a recent study by the University of New Orleans. “It’s not just the hard dollars, but the image and the brand of New Orleans,” said Doug Thornton, who’s been in charge of running the Superdome since 1997. “It’s the first thing you see when you drive in from the airport. It dominates the skyline. And there’ve been so many memorable moments that have played out here.”

quote:

The dome is 37 now. Thornton believes it can be viable for another 25 years. Whenever it does go, it will have witnessed more triumph and tragedy than just about any other venue in the world. It will have, quite simply, lived up to its name as a super dome.

The Dome is unmistakable in the skyline, which is an advantage that a lot of stadiums, especially newer ones, don't have

4 of the most watched events in US TV history have had the Dome featured in it

I think this is true for any stadium though.

I can't argue with that. I would guess most people driving in New Orleans would easily recognize the dome.

a large number of movies are filmed in NOLA...

My list would be:

1. Fenway/Wrigley
2. Fenway/Wrigley
3. Notre Dame's stadium
4. Dome
5. Rose Bowl

Anyone who doesn't believe that the Superdome can be picked out by more general population than say, Cowboy Stadium, is an idiot.

Sports fans can pick out stuff like Fenway, Wrigley, Rose Bowl, or LA Coliseum. But go to a grocery store in a random city in any state and show pics. I'd be willing to bet more people know the Superdome.
