Joe is correct that the scoring system in MMA needs to be tweaked.

I’d just like to see more judges. 3 is not enough to overcome idiocy. Whoever said 49-46 should never judge a fight again

No, go back and watch jones getting his head bounced around while going to both knees before briefly getting a take down.

I’m a purest about ground game. I’m not even for stand ups, but to try to give Jon any credit for anything on the ground in that fight is disingenuous.

The ground should have been zero factor in the scoring bc neither fighter had a dominate position long enough to matter

If the significant strikes are basically the same and one person scores a take down they win the round

I’m ok with the decision as a whole. The 49-46 was laughable but I can respect the two 48-47. Personally I had it 48-47 Reyes but 3 was close enough that I can justify Jones winning it with his pressure and the one take down

He finished a retiring Gus, went the distance with a bad middleweight, then lost to santos and Reyes

Very similar to gsp with Reyes being hendricks

Reyes 1 and 2
Jones 4 and 5

That much is clear.

3 was much muddier. Not many judges will give a challenger all 3 to start especially when Jones advanced and landed the entire time. And 3 wasn’t a clear winner.

That said, I personally scored it 3-2 Jones. Partly for that reason. I think you have to truly beat the champ to be the champ... Rd 1, 2 win. 3 tossup. Rd 4, 5 championship round losing isn’t enough to dethrone the champion. IMO.

Jones clearly won the “championship rounds”.

Anyway... great fight. Fun fight. Fun to discuss and dispute. Props to Reyes.

PS: I hate that takedowns count so much.

Sorry man, but you’re wrong.

They weren’t basically the same the the takedown is nothing if you can’t secure the position.

And the significant strikes they give Jon are oblique kicks and foot stomps. He never comes close to causing fight ending damage

All of this commentary after the fact seems like fluff to sell a shitty decision. Rogan sounded like a company man tonight, watching a different fight than the one everyone else watched.

Now that is ridiculous

That was Reyes best round

They must’ve sat next to Rogan and saw him stroking Jones. That was worth an extra point or two.

Depending on what site you looking at they were basically 2-5 apart on strikes

He caused just as much damage as Reyes did

I can follow this line of thinking. However, if you watch the 3rd rd and nothing else and honestly asses who caused the most damage. That answer will be Reyes, and with that he won the fight bc 1/2 were def him

The issue I have is that I believe you said earlier that wrestling is a part of the sport. And that's true. But so is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Much of that discipline is done on your back. At BJJ tournaments, many guys are happy to pull guard.

So how do we really judge what takedowns are worth? If a fighter is in perfect control fighting from his back, why is he considered to be losing?

Should landing punches and attempting submissions be the only thing counted?

I mean, what is "control" really? It's just a means to an end. Who cares if you're the fighter pressing forward and "controlling" the ring? It's almost irrelevant. What really matters is are you landing strikes?

I think they need to look at the whole idea of "control" and why it's weighted so heavily in judging fights. "Control", "aggression", etc... these are things judges use as criteria when scoring a fight. Why does control and aggression matter?

Lol, man if you think this then we watched completely different fights. I watched Jon get his head bounced around so bad he literally turned his back and ran away from his opponent.

Reyes showing 60 secs of output then letting Jones walk him down around the ring and also getting taken down all while being basically even on strikes does not win him the round

In this fight they should count as much as anything else that happened. It was a pace battle more than anything. Neither guy was ever in trouble outside of Reyes at the end from exhaustion.

411mania and Sherdog both scored it 48-47 Jones. I thought it could go either way.

What the hell were people watching? I started messaging my buddy after third and told him Reyes was clearly up 3-0.

If I’m not mistaken, I thought the fourth round was close even though Jones landed more strikes, but Reyes hurt him to start the round. I don’t understand how people can think Jones won second or third rounds, but then think it was all Jones last two. Again, Reyes hurt Jones in that round.

I will say this for Jon, he has a heck of a chin. He ate a bunch of shots tonight that no one else has been able to take. He’s def durable

Jon has good defense and block a lot of those shots and got out of exchanges at the right time

Once Reyes got gassed he was running and letting Jon control the ring and walk him down

That 4th and 5th Reyes was definitely running
