Pedro Martinez might be the best pitcher in MLB history. He was absolutely untouchable on the mound when he was with Boston.

Nolan Ryan is like 10 games above 500 and Pedro has one of the best winning percentages...

I love that we had Pedro, Maddux, and Randy Johnson, all at the same time, dominating hitters in the middle of the long ball era
What a treat it was to get to watch them pitch

A pitcher can still get only three outs an inning
I'm not arguing that, but which of the following is a more impressive inning:
A: K, groundout, K
B: K, groundout, BB, single, K
Both pitchers got 3 outs and have 18 K/9, but one pitcher has a 66% K rate, while the other has 40% K rate.

Really?? Going to compare a starter to a closer?? As if the stats are even compareable. FYI...if I had to choose, Ryan would be my starter with Pedro as my closer

Whelp....I'm the dipshit of the night thanks to too much JD. Would still take NR over PM....

I've seen several people in this thread say Nolan Ryan is overrated. I'm not really sure where he's generally rated, so it's hard for me to say whether he's overrated. But the guy is the all-time leader in strikeouts and walks, and hardly anyone is within 1,000 of either record. Just the longevity it took to accumulate those stats alone makes him an all-time great IMO. He had >300 wins, and he had 7 no-hitters. Cy Young winner or not, this guy was a great pitcher.
You all can fight it out amongst yourselves over who was better between him and Pete. I just wanted to throw out some evidence for Ryan's non-overratedness.

See my response to myself...a great example of why you shouldn't drink and post

TND is a racist bigot. He thinks Pedro Martinez and Mariano Rivera are the same person.
Just giving you a hard time.

Nolan pitched 7 no hitters. How many did Pedro throw? I think I'll take Nolan here.

I like NR a ton, but give me Pedro

Yep. Grew up in the 90s with those guys, loved them all.

The original argument was 'Oh, ryan walked a lot of guys, so he faced more batters', which makes the assumption that the ratio of strikes to other outs would rise in that case.
Which is BS.

The argument was who was the better strikeout pitcher and someone posted that Pedro had a higher K/9 and my point was the going by K% (which I think is a better measure) the difference would have been more even higher in Pedro's favor.

How old are you? There have been 10 to 15 better pitchers than Pedro. Bob Gibson's 1968 season is one of the all time greats. He pitched 100 more innings, threw 13 shut outs, 28 complete games and an ERA of 1.12.
2 time World Series MVP. The 67 series he was 3-0 with an ERA of 1.00 all 3 games were complete games. He also hit a home run in game 7.
You guys need to check up on your MLB history before spouting off this crap.

That is undoubtedly a great season, but the difference between pitching in 1968 and 2000 (in Fenway Park, in a stacked AL East) is night and day. Pedro's 2000 ERA+ beats that Gibson season by a decent margin.
