re: Why was Alabama the media choice for BCS NCG?

Why? Alabama was the better team.
That was proven true after the fact, but prior to that, there was no existing evidence that said Bama was better than LSU, other than their name was Alabama.

because they wanted a chance to redeem themselves
I agree with that; they individual commentators wanted to be proven correctly. Still the network clearly sanctioned it. For example, giving Saban multiple segments of free air time to lobby his program on college gameday.

Yes but we do have hindsight on our side.
Alabama was the best team in the country last season. That includes November 5th and was cemented on Jan 9th.

They were outplayed from the 2nd quarter on in a game played in front of 100,000 of their own fans.
You got to be kidding me. LSU didn't sustain a single drive in that entire game. Most of the yards in their first scoring drive came on a completed deep ball which was caused by a blown coverage in Bama's secondary, the second score came off a Bama turnover which put LSU's offense on the doorsteps of the end zone, and the third score came on an OT drive that started on Bama's 25 yard line. After the game, there wasn't a single person who said LSU outplayed Bama. Everybody was talking about all the blown opportunities by Bama in that game.

But the idea that they were way better on November 5th, like many sportswriters and media members wanted you to believe, was literally retarded.
Maybe not way better, but they were better.
More 1st downs, total yards and T.O.P. But missed 4 FGs.
Jan 9th settled the deal.

Brad Wing was the reason we won the game.

They were not not chip shot, fluke field goals.
Alabama got within the 30 1 time in the game.
11/5 was extremely close and LSU had more legit scoring chances though the game (inside the 10).

In all honesty it did feel like an ESPN/ABC media mandate...because everyone was doing it from Gameday to the Big 12 Title game...usually you have a few contrarians and difference of opinion but this was like a blanket talking point...it was just bizarre and almost in defiant opposition of the general (non-Bama) public ...I've never witnessed a mauling blowout like OSU gave OU and NOT heard the announcers slobber all over the victor. Instead...all we heard was OU didn't show up and here's our preview of LSU/Bama.
Regardless of why and how much influence they had...there's no doubt ESPN tried their best to shape the voting that final week...
Fox's National Sports Network can't come quick enough.

Why do you think they did this? I agree, it was so orchestrated and I don't see why they would have wanted a ratings loser.

LSU outgained Alabama from the 2nd quarter on. Everyone kept throwing out the total yardage at the end of game, so why can't it work that way too?
And give me a break on the blown coverage. So LSU didn't lose Richardson out of the backfield 2 or 3 times in that game, right? It only matters when Alabama blows coverages? I was going to say that Alabama sustained 3 drives from the start of the 2nd quarter, but I guess we can drop that down to 2 since Alabama got a lucky 35 yards from a swing pass to Richardson when no one was guarding him.
LSU made more big plays in big moments in that game than Alabama. That has a big effect on who wins games, and it showed on November 5th. They also got great special teams play, which is a big part of a defensive game, like we all knew it would be.
I'm not trying to attack you, but your statement came off as a completely shitting on LSU, as if they had absolutely no business being in that game, which is simply way off-base.

LSU was better than Alabama last year that is a FACT.
Posted on 4/18/12 at 1:17 am to BayouBengals03
People forget we could have beaten them just as bad as they could've possibly beaten us, Ruben Randel drops a touchdown on the goal line right before halftime, then in overtime Michael Ford is a foot away from running in a touchdown. Had either of those occurred I doubt they would've gotten a rematch.

Why do you think they did this?
1) Bama is blueblood?
2) ESPN convinced themselves that 2 SEC powers are ratings gold - despite the fact that the general public was loudly hinting we didn't want a rematch?
3) ESPN believing that people do in fact love rematches...Ali/Frazier?
4) SEC - ESPN's TV deal? The brand stays on top - the TV rights increase in value. From 2008:
"ESPN's promotional powers are well known. With so much money invested in its SEC properties, the network will undoubtedly roll out a relentless marketing push to support them. It's easy to foresee a scenario where paranoid Texas or USC supporters raise similar concerns if their team winds up in a late-season national-title jumble that includes an SEC power."
Hello Okie State.
This is funny:
"ESPN has gotten so much power lately, it's kinda scary." - Tommy Tuberville (2005)

I started a thread about my conspiracy theory on this very topic right when the BCS championship game match up was announced....
"ESPN clamoured for an all SEC bcs game, knowing that the country would be outraged over a 2 SEC team game and demand a playoff. When a playoffs is formed, espn will get the rights to playoff games and they'll make 10x what they're making now from the BCS."

Eh, all it takes is one season and LSU is back on top of the SEC. 2012 National Champions. Back-to-back SEC Champions (hasn't been done in 13 years). 5 SEC titles in 12 years. 3 national titles in 10 years.
Of course, they have to go out and do it. However, if they pull it off, they will be by far the most impressive team since the turn of the century, and even in the past two or three season.
We'll be alright.

Thanks. We should be better than every team on our schedule. And hopefully LSU and Alabama play one time next season, no matter who the winner is.
