If you liked Blade Runner and (I'd assume) Firefly then I highly recommend Cowboy Bebop. I know some people have a hard time getting past the fact that it's animated but trust me, it's worth it. Great characters, great music, and great plot lines.

It's not dark and gritty at ALL times, but certainly a large portion is.

For moderns, I really like Miller's Crossing.
Based on the Dashiell Hammett novel "The Glass Key."
