I'm starting to think that this is on purpose. They have talented enough writers, directors, artists, special effects artists, actors, etc to make good science fiction, but they consistently fail at it.
Good hard science fiction requires thought and imigination. Thats not something you find in a homerun hollywood blockbuster these days. Id love to see some of my favorite books like Enders Game or Live Free or Die play into a decently done movie but seeing what holly wood did to RAH's Starship Troopers and Frank Herberts Dune I'd rather they left them alone.

I saw it last night
It was War of the Worlds meets Cloverfield, but focusing on a small military group
It was just OK imo
I would wait for it to come to Netflix or something unless you just really really want to go see it

it had good concepts, but ended up using all of the cliches
the direction was shitty. i can't stand movies that intentionally leave out scope, especially epics or big action movies
it wasn't horrible, and if it's budget was $60M like i've seen reported they did a good job. but it really just didn't work. the execution made it very bland and stock. it had potential to be very original within a popular genre (like cloverfield)

Is b:la a first person movie?
this is where they went with it, and the visual direction suffered
the whole close up shaky cam bullshite has ruined a lot of action scenes in the past 10 years
this movie really made me appreciate what ridley scott did visually in black hawk down

starship troopers was fricking awesome, and it holds up after like 15 years

impossible to make a movie out of this. you're either goin to have a 15 hour movie or an encyclopedia like in the original movie
mini series is the only way. didn't sci fi do a good job of that a few years back?

I thought they did....
Can't stand the 80s version.

i know that sci fi did it. i watched some. i don't know if it's considered a good version of the story though

Ive watched it many times. As a movie it stands on its own but that story line was so far from Heinlein's perspective and the plot and character changes were way out of touch for the theme of the book. I. E. Dizzy was a man. Rico actually got Carmen and his dad didnt die but became his first sgt. It also just barely glossed over the themes of duty sacrifice and citizenship and the thing that made them cap ship troopers, the armor suits didnt appear until the third movie not to mention they left out an entire race of aliens. As for Dune the scifi version did cover the first three books and to their credit it was very faithful but come on who doesnt want to see an 80 foot sand worm on the big screen. And it was scifi channel not Holly Wood.

A Dune remake is in the works fwiw. Currently stuck in development hell, but the last I heard a script was being produced.
Also this movie had one cliche character giving one cliche speech. Everyting else was original-ish. If you didn't at least feel you got your money's worth then you probably went in as a critic looking for flaws rather than going as a movie lover looking for enjoyment.
This movie was not intended for movie snobs. If you want to see some award winning military movie (that ironically is nowhere near an accurate portrayal of what the real life counterparts do) then watch The Hurt Locker.

what is the one major plot hole?
Posted on 3/13/11 at 12:42 am to Mitwebot
I saw it tonight and it was much better than I thought it would be. I enjoyed it

There isn't one. I initially thought there was one, but it's not a plothole considering if you think outside of the box, what occurred just happened off screen and was not presented in line with the perspective of the story you were given. Hope that makes sense.

not to me, can you just write spoilers and say what it was?

*SPOILERS&
The aliens command hub somehow gets underground. I never noticed how it got there but the person I saw it with say that it could have arrived there upon impact with earth, meaning it was basically nailed in there. It was never shown on screen so it was a surprise to me when they just happened upon there but if you take a step back it makes sense.

SPOILERS
I kinda thought the same thing, but if it got there when it crashed into the ground, why did it break apart a non-destroyed building when it came out of the ground in the process?

Wasn't expecting much but I ending up enjoying the film. Has a lot of cliche elements to it and sometimes feels like a Marines ad. Hell at a few parts I wanted to sign my papers right there. The action was very entertaining.

*SPOILERS*
If I remember correctly, it look like it had a somewhat of a drill shaped bottom. Maybe it was drilled into the ground. Ultimately, it's not that big of a deal to me and is not a really a plothole because there is a lot of shite that occurred that we weren't shown.

dude i won't add in spoilers, but the final scene is a direct rip off of fricking black hawk down
having an alien force with that 1 weakness that has to be figured out to save mankind
having aliens who are impossible to kill without finding the trick
having aliens use our own technology against us, and we don't gain a tactical advantage until this absurdly simple issue is discovered
these are the things that i hoped this movie didn't have, and at first it didn't seem to have, but, in the end, it had them all. it really took away from the movie by making it completely formulaic

well i've discussed why i had problems enjoying the movie. they shot it really poorly. the visual direction was shite, and severely fricked up the enjoyable aspects of the film (the action)

****SPOILERS****
eh, it really doesn't make sense considering the size of the thing
there is no logical way our forces wouldn't have noticed this building-sized piece of machinery being put into the ground
if they truly had a recon team looking for this shite, it would take retards not to realize that the one thing that was 100x bigger than any other part of the invasion force MIGHT HAVE JUST BEEN that command center they were seeking
i'm not nit picking this to detract from the movie. there will almost always be some stupid plot hole in these types of movies. but just b/c it doesn't take away from the movie doesn't mean it's not a plot hole
