So you're sure they move away with "strong liberties" from the original story, which garners a "meh" from you, but you wish they would've come up with a story based loosely on the events?

Looks like they might add more action than what really happened. Just a thought.

Just got out of it. It was a good movie, for sure. Not as good as United 93 IMO, but similar in its incredibly realistic portrayal of real-life events. Edge of my seat all the way through, even though I knew what was going to happen. . . Judging by many of the reviews on RT, evidently Hanks gave a great performance. I don't see what all the fuss is about in that regard. I mean, he played his part well, but I didn't find anything special about it.
Overall, a great movie and definitely worth seeing! 8/10. I'm finding that this "real-life" genre (for lack of a better word) is one of my favorite types of movies. United 93, Zero Dark Thirty, Captain Phillips, all incredible!

I'd rather you just making a wholly original story using the basic premise (cargo ship is taken by desperate poor pirates) from the event rather than trying to use the "true story" and bastardizing the story so much that it hardly resembles the actual events.

Just got back. Excellent movie.
BTW, they had a preview for Lone Survivor. Can't wait for that one.

As far as them sympathizing with the pirates, it wasn't too bad. They did give you a glimpse at why they would do such a thing, but it wasn't forced on you. I personally don't judge the pirates, just like I don't judge the poachers that leave herds of elephants to rot, only to take their tusks.
They know nothing else. It is pirate, or die and the only option they have to feed their families. It's not like they have a ton of industry in Somalia and can change careers. My hate is directed at the war lords (and the brokers in the poachers cases) who are essentially forcing these guys to do this.
Maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age.

Saw Captain Phillips this weekend.
It was as good as Gravity IMO. Lots of suspense. Tom Hanks did a great job as usual. Overall excellent movie....definately one of the best this year.
And no...I did not sympathize with the pirates at all. I don't think it really steers you in that direction. There's about as much backstory on them as the captain of the Alabama in Vermont.
I wanted to hit the guy bitching about union rules and regs though. I think that was intentional.

it will certainly take this stance
I saw it last night. There was nothing in the movie which tried to get you to feel sorry for the pirates.
If you want to see an action flick... This isn't it. If you want to see a gripping story with fantastic acting, go see this movie. Truthfully, I could have waited to see this at home. That said, it goes on my list " of movies that I will always stop to watch when I'm looking for something to do and see this movie is on TV".
