They had a bunch of young actors and he just wanted to give them a jolt from what I recall.

That lasted like 3 minutes too long to be "mad at someone messing up the scene". What a douche.
He is the lead actor on a mutli million dollar budget movie. Of course the director and producers will side with him if he gets in a fight with a set guy. This is all the more reason for him to act like the bigger man and not be douche. And he knows this. I'm sure if he would have stopped and calmly yet sternly said "Do not walk in the back of the scene again. We are trying to shoot the scene here and you are disrupting this. Stay off the set. Don't do it again" in front of everyone, that guy would have stayed off the set. Why? Because he also knows that Bale is the lead actor in a multi million dollar movie and there is no way that he would ever win such a dispute.
Command respect. Don't demand it.

You think McG could have atleast come to the DP's aid a little and tried to curtail the arse chewing he obviously liked the guys work on We are Marshall to use him again in T4....

Well, he must have pissed off the crew, cause normally I don't think sound department would hand that over.
