Maybe parks and community could head to CBS and get triple the viewers instead of getting the axe like so many good shows get. Re runs of how I met your mother and Big Bang get in the double digits which is an abortion.

Parks and Rec is the real deal. One of the funniest shows I have ever seen, characters you care about, well written. THAT is a great sitcom.

BBT in comparison is just the worst.

parks and recs may just be my favorite comedy of all time. amazing cast headed by mr. ron swanson

eta: it's crazy to look back and think how I disliked it watching the first season. this is an example of a show righting itself after a bad start

Yeah. I was confused watching tonight and the last few weeks. I was coming here to ask if they are supposed to be together and I missed something from the end of last season.

I think one of its (BBT) principal problems is that it postures as if it's "smart" humor, but in actuality it's anything but. Most of the time the show works to actively pit the audience against the main characters, as is evidenced by the fact that more often than not the hyper-intelligent protagonists are generally not delivering the joke, they're actually the subject of the joke. It basically tries to turn the audience into 8th grade bullies giving wedgies to the nerds because they're "different."

Thank you. I get funny looks when I tell my friends about how I can't stand BBT, but I've never really been able to put it all out like this. The best I've come up with so far is that it is 2.5 Men with more multisyllabic words (Same writer, right?).

Interesting.

I think that some of the jokes go over some people's heads. As an engineer I find the show hilarious. I was a nerd of a sort and do not find the show to be picking on the characters.

Give examples of a show that was popular that the main characters were belittled because they were supposed to be "bullied". You won't find one because for all of the self-depricatng humor the main characters impose on themselves in BBT they are loved above all.

Walowitz is getting married. Sheldon is getting serious with his gf. Penny is developing (and might I add also is the butt of jokes for NOT being a nerd).

Bottom line: it's not a show about picking on nerds. It's a show about people who happen to be nerdy like half the people on the M/TV board.

good point. It's funny when a episode doesn't live up to the paintball one or another great one people come in here saying terrible episode.

This show gets a lot of that. It's their fault in a way because they put out so many outstanding episodes and if some episodes aren't that good they get trashed.

you are not alone.

"The Big Bang Theory" is not a bad show. There is something to be said for being a sit com that is both funny and easily accessible. It's hard to compare Community and Big Bang because they are completely different types of shows.

The Big Bang Theory makes fun of nerds, jocks, sex, dating, and pop culture in the context of a series that is easily watched out of context and out of order.

Community makes fun of similar stuff, however, its humor is also aimed at genres of tv and film, psychology, vanity, and most of all, itself. It is very difficult to appreciate an episode of Community if you didn't watch the show from the beginning. There are so many inside jokes aimed at the audience that newcomers will miss.

It's kind of like comparing "MacGuiver" to "24". Both were fun action series, but one required a lot of prior knowledge of previous episodes to get into, and one didn't. They are both great in their own right. I, however, happen to prefer 24 to "MacGuiver" just as I prefer "Community" to "The Big Bang Theory"

Good assessment and analogy IMO.

So you're saying that the audience isn't placed in opposition to the main characters? Look at the “jokes" and listen to when the laugh track activates.

Whenever Sheldon says something he shouldn't, misses a social cue, or engages in some sort of outlandish behavior because obviously hyper-intelligent people just can't function like “normal people," laugh track.

Whenever Howard does something disgustingly creepy, exactly as you would expect from a smart person because when was the last time you ever saw an intelligent person successfully flirt and ESPECIALLY get laid, laughter.

You can do this for every character in the show that is depicted as intelligent. Penny essentially serves as the straight man for the show, and the jokes focus on the stereotypical inadequacies of intelligent people. I feel it would be less problematic if there were a single example of a socially high-functioning intelligent person, but to my knowledge it doesn't exist. Granted, most of my knowledge comes from viewing random reruns at my parents' home when I visit, so I don't claim to be an expert -- these are just my observations, I suppose I should have made that more clear from the beginning.
