What was the point of the flashbacks with Baby Harrison and Deb???

She's telling him how great a father he will be....so he takes from that "abandon your son with a serial killing chick in Argentina"

Dexter was such an amazing show at one time. I know it hasn't been for a few years now, but I just wish they could have done it some justice and had a great ending.

Its progression reminded me of the office.

But at least the office made an effort the last season and ended it extremely well.

For Dexter it seemed no one really gave two shits.

I'm pissed I devoted 12 hours to watch that terrible final season. I would have quit had I not known it was the last season a few episodes in.

The previous few seasons weren't the best, but they weren't enough to make me quit the show.

Maybe the worst series finale I've ever personally seen, and I used to absolutely love dexter.

That ending sucked hard core.

Would have loved to see:

Deb shoot Dexter and say "It's over"

or

Dexter go to Argentina and the final shot is him in a kill room

or

Fast forward 20 years and we see Harrison back in Miami working as a blood spatter analyst... complete with a custom knife set.

or

With that shitty arse sharknado special effects near the end, have a freaking shark come and swipe Dexter off his boat into the water.

Any of those would have been better.

My girlfriends primary motive for killing people is when they inconvenience her. I know, I'll abandon her to take care of my child in a foreign country. Seems reasonable.

At least Harrison will die peacefully when she poisons him.

Perfect ending would have been dex dying. Deb getting Harrison and then seeing he had the dark passenger.

Leaving the audience to wonder if she will teach him the code

That would have been a good ending.

I still would've wanted some of his coworkers to find out dexter was a serial killer. Their reactions would've been priceless. I did enjoy Bautista- "you don't even work here anymore"

I'm still upset and laughing about this. Such a depressing end to a show that started out relatively strong the first 4 seasons.

Maybe that ending was Michael C Hall's depression about the last season. Kind of like a troll to end the series

I'm pretty fricking speechless right now. Just finished it. "What the frick?" is a vast understatement. Does anyone know if the writer changed over the seasons? I'm confused as to how this well thought out plot just took a complete 180. I didn't want to bash until I saw how the last episode wrapped everything up but now I'm on the bandwagon. Can't believe they wrote this and decided that it was fitting.

I believe most of the original writers had been gone since around season 4-5. I don't know where the link was, but I recently read an article about the background on this season's writing crew and they're terrible. It's like Showtime, just cheaped out on the writers because they knew they had the ratings no matter what.

The point of the Deb flashbacks has nothing to do with Dex's relationship with his son. It's to show the positive side of his relationship with Deb and remind the audience why the end is the way it is.

I don't know. Plenty here (and everywhere on the internet) hated the ending, but I actually tend to go the other way. While some of the other endings would have been sexier and more "frick yeah" worthy, this ending was just flat out sad. They built up the idea that things could end well all season long to tear it down in 10 minutes. I don't think the writing was as lazy as people tend to think it was. I thought the last 10 minutes was heartbreaking to most people who followed the show from beginning to end. I think it was intentional. To finally show this light at the end of the tunnel and to appear as if the show has lightened enough to let him have his moment, only to strip it from everybody.

I followed it from beginning to end. To watch Dexter's boat ride into the horrible CGI hurricane was painfully heartbreaking. I know they run on a low budget but C'MON! I feel like the visual of that was dumber than the idea.

Show how far he has come. He was pretty emotionless about Harrison being born and then he became a loving person.

And to show the relationship between he and Deb. She talked about how he was always there for her and protected her. I think they did that so you would understand why he pulled the plug on her.

I get what you're saying but it wasn't written and executed well at all. Dexter shouldn't have had a happy ending but that ending was a total cop out. It was lazy because it took the easiest way out possible. He needed to either die or get busted. I would have liked to see Dexter die defending deb or Harrison against Saxon, then having Deb bust or kill Saxon. Eventually soon there after Masuka discovers some clues that lead the him slightly realizing dexter was a serial killer and it fades out... Does he run with it out brush it under the rug. Show ends.

"In the very last scene of the series," Philips explained, "Dexter wakes up. And everybody is going to think, 'Oh, it was a dream.' And then the camera pulls back and back and back and then we realize, 'No, it's not a dream.' Dexter's opening his eyes and he's on the execution table at the Florida Penitentiary. They're just starting to administer the drugs and he looks out through the window to the observation gallery. "And in the gallery are all the people that Dexter killed—including the Trinity Killer and the Ice Truck Killer (his brother Rudy), LaGuerta who he was responsible killing, Doakes who he's arguably responsible for, Rita, who he's arguably responsible for, Lila. All the big deaths, and also whoever the weekly episodic kills were. They are all there. "That's what I envisioned for the ending of Dexter. That everything we've seen over the past eight seasons has happened in the several seconds from the time they start Dexter's execution to the time they finish the execution and he dies. Literally, his life flashed before his eyes as he was about to die. I think it would have been a great, epic, very satisfying conclusion."

This I agree with and they at least could have had him put on some sort of hospital clothing to get back onto the boat. It would have been better to just not have the final scene at all than to do what they did.

I'm not saying it was expertly written by any stretch of the imagination. I just think that it's flying over most people's head what the writers were trying to accomplish. It just sucks that the only good 30 minutes of the season were sandwiched into the last episode by the time everyone had checked out.

No man. I think you may be trying way too hard to make more out of it than what it was. The quality of the writing was terrible long before the finale.

If you liked it, you liked it but let's not act like the vast majority just "didn't get it".

While I think the writing was lazy (I mean how did Dexter survive the hurricane?), the ending did make sense:
1. No way Dem could have lived with her guilt; she had to die and who better to put her out of her misery than Dexter?
2. Dexter realized that his dream of happiness was just that a dream. He cannot change his innate nature so it was die or survive and his instinct is to survive. He will at least be somewhat content that his son will not have to grow up with the influence of Dexter's dichotomy.
3. Harrison told Dexter that he loved Hannah and though she seems like an unlikely mother, she might be the ideal parent to raise a child who potentially inherits a dark passenger. Hannah kills to survive not because she is compelled to. Hopefully she teaches her survival instincts to Harrison along with a code that makes him realize that a mission to kill wrongdoers in fact endangers your own survival and those whom you care about.
4. Dexter only now realizes this but he is compelled to kill so the only recourse to protect those he loves is to either die or live alone; as a survivor he made the only logical choice.
