Luke is like Mace Windu, he uses dark side techniques, but what he does it is for good purposes.

What Freddie said. I think Luke knows how to use the dark side having mastered both. Kylo wants to kill him b/c he is the most powerful Jedhi in the Universe. Luke, knowing he is so powerful, seeks seclusion to avoid confrontation and also out of a sense of hopelessness that a betrayer will always exist and try to destroy the good jedhis he is training. He goes away to avoid any more bloodshed.

Kind of like the belief that if we just get rid of all the guns or nuclear weapons all the murders and wars will stop. A bit naive for a Jedhi master to believe if true, but certainly in line with the fantastical musings of a Hollywood writer/director/producer.
