Its because the general public are big dumb animals.

If by general public you mean Fox, then you'd be correct. I'm sure the big budget of the show, Fox airing the episodes out of order (and moving the night it aired so that nobody could ever catch the show unless they read the fricking TV guide every week), and barely any advertising didn't have anything to do with the show's demise. It's not like Firefly didn't garner any steady viewership... it's just that the show was too comparatively expensive. Think about how many other good shows Fox has hung out to dry in the same fashion.

Would you rather have an awesome movie like serenity to close out the story, or have that ridiculous 10-year jump to a doomsday future with reaver-wannabe people running around and echo with a gray streak that was a straight rogue knockoff?

I enjoyed some elements of the jump. And Epilogue 1 was awesome enough by itself really.

Great question. Another show that didn't get a fair shot or fair budget.

Another show I was getting into when it was cancelled in season 1 was "Haunted" starring Matthew Fox. I always seem to pick the new shows that don't make it.

I think Lost is the only show I have ever watched from the pilot that actually had a complete run.

Fox botched it, but in general scifi shows don't normally last long. Lost, X-Files, and the various Star Trek series are about the only examples of mainstream network success. There are a few straight to syndication successes like Hercules/Xena, but outside of that most scifi series get canceled before their story has been fully told.

The wife and I finally sat down and watched season 1 + Serenity over the last week, and it definitely left me wanting more. We both really enjoyed Buffy and Angel, so we figured we'd like Whedon's other popular series.

On a side note, I got to walk around the set of Serenity while it was being built. I was interning in LA for the summer, and my brother was dating a girl that worked at Universal Studios. We went to pick her up one evening and she had to stay a bit later, so she took us to the set and let us walk around. I'd wanted to watch Firefly and Serenity ever since then, but just hadn't had the chance until now.

That's awesome. I totally would have stolen something. I'm a total nerd with this show, even forced my girlfriend to make me a replica of Jayne's hat that I wear around during the winter.

I enjoyed firefly as much as the next guy but there's no way it's even in the same league as Lost. Not that they should really be compared anyhow.

I have a much greater appreciation for it now that I've seen the show. We got to walk around the cargo bay mostly, but I think I got to sit in the pilot's chair too. Either that or the shuttle.

And you just gave me an idea for what I want my wife to make me for our anniversary.

Is the "evil Alliance" that is being fought in "Firefly" the descendants of the US and Chinese governments?

I ask because of this flag:::

Great show, just finished the 1st season, and it sucks there is no more.

---Spoiler_____

So what is the Sheppard's deal with the Alliance?

I ask because when injured the Alliance officer quickly let him go to the medical ward after seeing his ID.

They never got to address that in the series or movie, unfortunately

Firefly has a universe with more background than the Star Trek universe.
(well maybe not, there are no aliens)

Still, there are so many questions left unanswered about Firefly.
