My favorite line in the whole movie is when Hartmann tells Lawrence/Pyle that he's so ugly, he could be a modern-art masterpiece.

Lou Gossett's opening scene in "An Officer and a Gentleman" was similarly memorable. It starts at 1:12.

Seriously, I love Full Metal Jacket. Some say it is overrated but I disagree. R. Lee Ermey is awesome. Fire Base Gloria is one of my favorite R. Lee Ermey performances.

Agreed, and I also disagree with the "First half is awesome, second half sucks" assessment, and think most would agree.
The Vietnam half of the movie is great, but the first basic training half is just SO fricking good that any second half would've paled in comparison. Just because basic training was so awesome doesn't mean the Vietnam half sucked.

I love the movie. The only problem is that I share the name of one of the ridiculed soldiers, and my friends are sure to quote it just to bring me down a peg.
People don't like the Vietnam scenes? That where one of the best lines in the movie is.
"How can you kill innocent women and children?"
"Easy, you don't lead them as much!"
And I thought the sniper scene was money.
