Lol...I forgot about that. Those were supposed to be Baboons and the size of them seemed about right and I am sure you could make them very aggressive. But why did all of the others stop when he killed the hairless one?

It was okay….the one bad thing about watching series almost exclusively now, is when I do watch a movie everything feels so damn rushed.

100% agree. Especially with a movie like this.

Was coming to say this. How they thought this made any sense at all is baffling.

I didn’t mind the character Denzel played but not sure he was a good fit. Maybe it was his accent.
Felt like it was his American Gangster character but in a Roman setting. It was jarring.

I watched this last night and finished it up earlier today. Man, that wasn’t a very good movie.
The acting was pretty shitty (Denzel included). The twin emperors were just awful. What made Commodus so great was that you could see he was a calculating psychopath. His nonsense at least made sense. These two clowns were just overly cartoonish and made no sense. They would’ve been killed years ago. Especially the little one. I know they tried to explain it away with the dialogue about his venereal disease “going to his head” but it was still hilariously stupid. The main guy (Hanno/Lucius) wasn’t bad or good…he was just sort of bland, which is not what you need in a Gladiator movie. It’s like everyone was a caricature and not an actual person.
I rarely pay attention to scores but this one seemed noticeably bad to me. Just odd music and score choices at times.
The sharks in the Colosseum were hilarious. Hell, I’d even buy that you did it, but don’t make them immediately attack everything that hits the water. That’s not realistic at all (not that this movie was going for that).
That brings me to my next point: the original at least tried to stay within the realm of possibility. This one was overly cartoonish. A dude was stand-riding a fricking rhino for chrissakes.
Which brings me to by far the dumbest part of the movie:
The ape/baboon things were so overly stupid. And the CGI was legit trash. I’ve seen better SFX on the SyFy channel. And that scene didn’t even make sense anyway…those monkeys would’ve laid waste to literally every human in the sand. When Hanno bites the one he would’ve gone apeshit (no pun intended) and ripped his face off for fun.
It almost felt like they just thought of a bunch of “cool” scenes they wanted to put in a movie and then half-assed filled in the rest of the movie.
I actually liked the plot of the movie a lot though, with the hero being a banished Lucius after his mom sent him away to protect him since he was the heir. My gripe with that is that it does seem that she would’ve brought him back once he was grown, and why was it a big deal anyway if Rome was given back to the people after the first movie? He would no longer be in line for emperor if that way of governing was basically abolished. But I did like that Maximus was the dad and she was now married to the general who was put on bullshite missions by the clown twins to conquer as much of the world as possible. The beginning was a little weird with him seemingly literally not knowing who he was, since he was like 10 years old when he was sent away. I wasn't a big fan of retconning him as Maximus's son though. I get why they did it, but it sort of tarnishes his character in the original though.
However, while the movie wasn’t very good, I did weirdly kinda like it. Or at least not hate it. I agree that “decent watch if you already pay for the streaming service” is a good way to describe it.

They did flood the Coliseum in real life and reenacted famous Greek and Roman sea battles.

Not with fricking sharks my dude.

I cut it off after the first 20 minutes or so. It wasn't because it was bad, but I just wasn't invested in the characters enough to commit 2.5 hours the other night.
Within the first 5 minutes of the Original Gladiator, I was completely invested in those characters. This one? I just didn't care that much.
I'm sure I will finish it sometime in the next month, but...it just isn't that good.

Or sharks seemingly trained to attack anything that touched the water. Only thing better would’ve been if they had fricking laser beams attached to their fricking heads.

Funny enough, had they just been historically accurate and use crocodiles, that part would make sense.

And would still have been cool.

Just saw it. I don't even know where to start with this.
If you know even a little about Roman history this was an abomination.
But that's not what this was for. Decent effort if you're going to reboot it.
Maximus wasn't a decent man apparently. Plowing young girls.

Flooding of the Colosseum was real. And apparently they could do it relatively quickly. The sharks were a big issue. They could have used Nile Crocodiles like they actually used in the Colosseum and had the same general effect.

This only would have happened in the 80s CE. Once the hypogeum was built underneath in 90 CE by Domitian, this would have been impossible. The last recorded naumachia in the Colosseum was 89 CE, and this movie was set over 100 years later.
Every scene of this movie was cringe. It’s like it went out of its way to be historically inaccurate. Gladiator I wasn’t accurate, but wasn’t insanely so.

Saw this. It sucked. It really was Denzel as Training Day in Rome.
The gladiator fights sucked and looked worse than Crowe’s from years ago.
Should have just had Pedro in the lead role.

Started in the first 5 minutes, trebuchets didn't exist then. He should know that from when he did Kingdom of Heaven.
