Wet Hot American Summer is a good one.

Best speech of all time.
I've heard that speech a couple of times in my career. The advertising sales position I worked for 30 years was for a company that had that kind of outlook. They paid a small salary but high commissions. I outlived at least a dozen sales managers and and six general managers in those 30 years as they had the same kind of expectations from their management. Told a couple of Baldwin character types I'd be there long after they were gone. Told one of them that in front of 30 other sales people during his day one, "Third prize is you're fired" speech. The other sales people took me out to lunch the day he got fired. It was a fun place to work.

Playing By Heart (1998)
Dennis Quaid in PBH made me think of:
Traffic (2002)
Dennis Quaid
Don Cheadle
Erika Christensen
Benicio del Toro
Michael Douglas
Albert Finney
Stephen Baur
Luis Guzmán
Benjamin Bratt
Amy Irving
James Brolin
Catherine Zeta-Jones
Topher Grace
Salma Hayek (uncredited)
plus a bunch of well known Hispanic actors
Playing By Heart Spoiler question...
Doesn't Jolie fall in love with a "very sick" guy in that?

For action stars, The Expendables I and II
I think there's a difference between putting together a solid cast that works and just calling up a bunch of action movie stars and letting them have fun.
Great suggestions so far.
I'll throw Heat in there.
Al Pacino
Robert Deniro
Val Kilmer
John Voight
Tom Sizemore
Ashley Judd
Wes Studi
Mykelti Williamson (Bubba from Forrest Gump)

For you older movie board readers....how about:
"Its A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"
Good one. Another really, really old one that should make the list for the combination of the quality & the quantity of the cast, is Grand Hotel
Greta Garbo
Lionel Barrymore
John Barrymore
Joan Crawford
Wallace Beery
At the time it was made it was by far the largest A list grouping ever. Films evolved from having unknown actors to one star, two stars (romances) to ensemble casts. It was one of the first "Blockbusters".
All of the posters empathized the greatness of the cast.

Has to be near, if not at, the top.
I would also nominate:
The Longest Day(1962): Eddie Albert, Paul Anka, Henry Fonda, Roddy McDowall, Robert Mitchum, Rod Steiger, John Wayne, Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Peter Lawford and a good many more.
Midway (1976): Dabney Coleman, Erik Estrada, Henry Fonda, Glenn Ford, Charlton Heston, Robert Mitchum, Pat Morita, Tom Selleck, Hal Holbrook and several others.
And although it was before a good many of them became stars, American Graffitti (1973): Ron Howard, Harrison Ford, Richard Dryfuss, Cindy Williams, etc.

I thought I ended this thread with A Bridge Too Far.
There is no movie that has ever been made that can compete with this list of heavy hitters:
Sean Connery
Ryan O'Neal
Gene Hackman
Michael Caine
Anthony Hopkins
James Caan
Maxamillian Schell
Elliot Gould
Laurence Olivier
Robert Redford
Nothing else even sniffs this list.

Yeah I read the thread title and departed was the first to come to mind. I don't know exactly what the thread means though. There are movies with more stars but I'm looking at it as biggest/best casted movie. A couple of the best casted movies I can think of are the departed, assassination of Jesse James, and the town.
