Voice, as well as possible motion capture stuff.
Thats one thing for a goblin, an ape, or a cat person, but I don't think you would be able to do that with a dragon since I'm quite sure Smaug is going to be far differently proportioned than a human.

Dude...movements and shite. Not his body shape.

Yes, but motion capture tends to have near identical shape to the actor's body. This isn't like Gollum, Ceasar, the Na'vi, or King Kong, which all have roughly humanoid appearances. It would be as if Peter Jackson motion captured the Fell Beasts in the original film. There seems to be no benefit in doing motion capture with Smaug because his body would not remotely function like a human's. Plus Smaug's face is not even remotely humanoid in appearance. Its like motion capturing Supercroc.

I'm not exactly sure what they are using the mo-cap for either. But I fully trust in PJ.
And can't wait to see the special features on these DVD's.
Also can't wait to see what he does with the Necromancer/Sauron's voice. The appendices and other writings of Tolkien decribed it as very fair and beautiful...which is how he seduced everyone when he was still in human form.

....Wait he's actually doing it? I just thought he was voicing the character. I just don't see any benefit to doing motion-capture with Smaug since I imagined his body to be far, far different from a human's, and closer to a giant lizard/snake hybrid with wings. I trust Jackson, I just don't know why he's doing it with the character. Plus why not just get Andy Serkis to do the motion capture? He's the world's best and the entire system is pretty much built around him and his movements.

This will be in the movie? I would be so excited. I was always so intrigued about Saroun even though they didn't show him to much in the LOTR movies

Yeah, Cumberbatch has the role as both Smaug/Necromancer, much like John Rhys-Davies did Treebeard.
I am not sure how corporeal PJ is going to make Sauron at this point, because in the book he was only gaining his power and form back, and as in the LOTR, that was only a spirit. He had lost his power and human form some 2000 years before in the downfall of Numenor.
I highly recommend The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales for more bad arse tales about Middle-Earth.
And this from OML:
I think it may not be the 'body' of Smaug per se..but maybe facial expressions etc, especially in the pivotal conversation with Bilbo.

I suspect these movies will be on par with the LotR trilogy in terms of style, acting, etc. I was initially skeptical about breaking up Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into 2 movies, but they did that masterfully. I have no doubts we will be saying the same thing about The Hobbit in a couple years

Granted, money-grabbing is surely a cruder way of saying the same thing, but IMO to live in the pretend world you seem to be wanting to fabricate here by your own cynical slam-response is to live in delusion.
Many.
God, humanity is doomed. I meet more and more people every day who seem to think they've come to some epiphany by "realizing" that all human motives are superficial. They aren't. It's just you and the rest of the cynics.
