This is no different than if they had stuck laser rifles and triple breasted alien whores in 3:10 to Yuma.
Honestly, that sounds kinda cool.

Steampunk is a pretty common fantasy element writers like to introduce to otherwise stark backdrops. Elements of the wild west and science fiction have always been closely tied together.
When it's done poorly, it's much worse than realism. This type of fantasy usually meshes a lot better with Victorian England, though, since the steam technology is only an exaggeration of what actually existed rather than utterly anachronistic. Again, though, I think that crying about realism here is akin to crying about the concept of magic in high fantasy.

It really looks god-awful. Brolin could be a good actor if he'd pick some decent movies once in a while.

Why do they have to keep adding technology that did not exist to western themes?
It's called Steampunk, which is a sub-genre of Science Fiction
Oops, Muppet beat me to it.
I've read some good Steampunk short stories that were set in the Wild West, FWIW.

I think he'll redeem himself in Wall Street 2
