I've seen AI mentioned. I agree that the ending sucked, but I don't think the movie was THAT good to begin with.
On the other hand, Minority Report, another one by Thpielberg, was a fantastic film that cheered up the ending entirely too much. I think it would have been great to do it just as it was, but at some point towards the very end, show or strongly imply that Cruise's character had never actually been freed from prison and all of the happy stuff was part of his rehab.
Can't think of any off the top of my head, but a handful of movies I think would have been much better with the good guy dying at the end.
Oooh, just thought of one in particular. Once Upon a Time in the West would have been great with Fonda's character dying as he did in the standoff, then Brosnan taking a few victorious-looking steps and collapsing.

that whole movie pretty much sucked.
after all is said and done, the most recent one i can think of is no country for old men. great movie and they end with some bull crap dream recap of tommy lee. awful. just awful. i know what the intent was, and i could care less. i don't even want to get into it b/c it ticked me off that much.

Sunshine I believe is the best most recent example. Had a real 2001 space odyssey feel then turned into a movie with a boogey man. Would have been better if they would have had the guy who liked the sun room go crazy and start offing people. Also I liked the ending of The Mist as well as the movie, my wife couldn't handle the fact he did what he did. She didn't think his character deserved that kind of pain.

Matrix Revolutions. I don't know what the little indian girl is supposed to be other than the last exile. I don't know what the last exile is. Is the matrix shut down and all the humans freed? I just don't get it.

I honestly don't. I think I must have blocked it out of my memory it was so bad.
I seriously have not watched the end again after the first viewing.
