quote:the issue is not how he plays richie, the issue is that Richie is the central figure in the show thus far.
How else do you play a coke snorting raving lunatic?
Everyone acts like Richie has some rare gift for spotting talent and hearing commercial success in music, but his label is a mess of shitty acts, the business side is in a shambles, the dude is a coked out tornado and no one around him seems to be worth a shite. It just goes on and on episode after episode of Richie getting coked up, screaming and destroying things. He even killed a dude and covered it up.
I am tired of the same old anti-hero story telling crap. I think the show being about a more nuanced character like Juno Temple's Jamie Vine would be far more compelling.

I'm thinking that the Richie character couldn't be much different if the whole set-up is that he's on a downward spiral and that there will eventually be some kind of redemption after hitting rock bottom. How else would he be played?
He's obnoxious and arrogant and ostentatious... just like a music-industry big shot typically was, particularly back then. I don't buy into all that "sympathetic" horseshite. It's like the idea that music that HAS to be catchy and easily digestible or it's no good.

Meh. He just fought with the Dice Man - Bo killed Dice, baw.

Fair enough, and that's despicable. If he came clean right away, he could have avoided jail by testifying against Bo. But he would have lost the company, for sure.
So, he's supposed to be 1 part Tony Soprano, 1 part Don Draper and 1 part Andy Travis (a little WKRP reference for you old MFers out there.)
I get it. I like it so far. I'm going to let it play out.

Can anyone explain the last three minutes of this episode to me? Did he look for God and Buddy Holly appeared? Did the last 3 minutes actually take place or was it imagined?

Some body can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure it was flashback. That guy following him around all episode was a coke fueled imagination of an old friend that he had accidentally killed in that car crash that they flashed back to.
Then it showed him in real time back at the place that the accident happened at at the very end with the roller coaster. Not too sure about the purpose of Buddy Holly.

Correct.
Buddy Holly was mentioned earlier in the episode.

Well the show is based in the 70's...
She also said on the Stern show last week that it was a merkin.

That was all pretty obvious.
And the first scene with Ernst made it pretty obviois we were being "Fight Club'd" no one else interacted with him.
When Richie said "no Buddy Holly" it was just like how he freaks when anyone mentions Buck Rogers. I knew something was up then.
Eta: I agree supa....Richie's over the top behavior has become a little stale, but I still like the show.
