Wasn't Red Dawn the first movie with a PG-12 rating? I remember seeing Footloose in the theater back in the day and there was a minor uproar because there was a shite ton of swearing in it and then they came out with the new rating and Red Dawn was either the 1st or one of the 1st with the new rating.

There is nothing even remotely close to the Cold War context that existed when RD was released. I remember seeing that movie as a sophomore in high school. I definitely wanted to kill some fricking Commmies after that movie.
