Movies these days rely heavily on style instead of substance.

I often wonder if this will be true or not. Let's say that facebook becomes obsolete in 10 years (probably wont but for arguments sake). Then 10 years after that will people that weren't there for the rise and peak popularity of facebook really be able to identify at all with this movie? Would they even be able to follow it as coherently as we were able to?

You don't need to know shite about Facebook to understand that movie. Hell, it's not really even about Facebook; it's about the lawsuit which was about money and passion both of which are timeless. Now they may not understand why Facebook was such a big deal, but that is true for a lot historical topics. It was a good story that will stand.

Of the movies that I've seen, I would put it in the top 3 with the King's Speach and Toy Story 3. I haven't seen True Grit and I won't see 127 hrs. I know the 127 story and it's something I don't need to see regardless of how good. Wish I knew more about Black Swan before I saw it, because I wouldn't have seen that either.

While I have seen all the films, I've indicated the films I've seen 2 times in bold, and the underlined film 3 times.

That being said I can safely say that The King's Speech deserved best picture. Maybe I got sick of Inception and pouring over it's dream web.

If I had to I'd rank them as follows:

The King's Speech
The Social Network
Black Swan
Inception

--- the rest

But again, for arguments sake, if you take Facebook and it's importance in today's society out of the equation, is the movie still really that good? That's why I question its staying power.

Facebook's importance is why a lot of money and passion is involved. It may have been why you went to see the movie, and it may be the reason why people won't want to see it in the future after it goes away, but it's not essential to understanding the story. This could have been about television, telephones, railroads etc. A well written story, which this was, will hold up well.

A really good movie makes you think, challenges your beliefs, or at least presents something new.

Martin
The Last Picture Show
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Carnival of Souls

Nothing on the Oscar list stuck in my mind even a day later.
