Also, reading this thread reaffirms my thinking that The U is far and away the most overrated 30 for 30.
Agreed
It was okay, but it was mostly a history lesson. None of the participants are any wiser, they're all still proud to be thugs.

I liked the following in no particular order:
The U
Pony Excess
The best that never was
Two Escobars
Once Brothers
The two Escobars intriqued me since I remember when Pablo Escobar was taken down. I also remember when the other Escobar accidentally kicked the goal in for the US. We all knew he was going to get killed. I never knew how much Pablo's drug money had influence on Soccer in Columbia.
Also, I really enjoyed the Once Brothers. I never liked Divac when he played for the Lakers since I can't stand the Lakers but this documentary showed a different side of him that is not shown on the basketball court. It was so powerful to see two guys who were so close but grew so far apart just because they were from different areas of a country where the government fell apart.

Yeah but it was a story we were all mostly familiar with too. Unlike the others that were outstanding, I didn't really learn much from The U.

I actually thought the best two were Once Brothers, and The Best that Never Was. ETA: I forgot about Two Escobars, that one was fantastic.

Into The Wind was my favorite. I am shocked this was only mentioned once in this thread. I highly, highly recommend watching it. The story is so gripping.
The Two Escobars was the best done of all the documentaries and I would put it with Into the Wind. It was so badass, but brilliant. The only reason I think I would give the nudge to Into The Wind is because I am a runner.
I remember turning on the Best There Never Was in the middle and watching a few insane highlights and then not understanding what was going on, so I turned it off. I really need to see this one.
Also, Once Brothers is the other one I would want to see. Looks terrific. I could definitely see it being in my top 30 for 30s.
As an aside, I think The U was polarizing to many viewers in terms of how enjoyable it was. It does not make it overrated. You just love or hate it.

I thought the U was pretty bad. The tranny tennis player sucked. I didn't like the red sox one either. The dude that bill Simmons was talking to the whole time got in my nerves.
The Len bias one isn't getting much love. I thought it was great.

Marcus Dupree really hits home with me because I live an hour away from his high schoo team Philly and never heard of the guy until the documentary. Sad stuff. Just watched the one on Wayne Gretzky, how can you trade him away?

one of the best and certainly the most touching was the story of the Canadian runner Terry Fox ...

Pony Excess flowed the best out of all of them. It really shows how crazy texan's are about football from all levels. Plus I'm a huge Norm fan

The Two Escobars
Not a soccer fan and don't really speak Spanish but it is riveting.
Never new Pablo Escobar funded Columbia's Olympic soccer team. They were the only successful team the country ever had and the only reason they were so good was because Escobar funded the whole country's program, including building and funding fields, leagues, unis, ball, etc. for kids. Never knew about the country's best player being murdered.
I knew professional tennis players all supposedly did coke in the 70's and 80's but didn't know about the soccer guys doing it too. They went and played at the prison after Escobar was arrested. This is the guy who set the bar for the kind of killing that's going on in Mexico today and he was funding everything for that country's team.
Amazing stuff. Would watch it again tonight if it was playing.

Sorry for multiple posts in a row. Haven't been on here in a while.
I lived in Kosciusko, MS is the early seventies. Philadelphia, Eupora, Starkville & Ackerman were all in our district (just like they were in Dupree's day). I Played 7th, 8th and 9th grade football games on the same fields all of Dupree's highlights are on.
Was already grown and living in Dallas when he signed with OU. Nothing could have reinforced the belief that they were paying players more than that. I followed recruiting back then (Through The weekly Tiger Rag tabloid)and the kid was a lock to USM. I remember reading in the Dallas Morning News he signed with OU and being amazed. Great story. Every big time recruit should watch it.

...which is why I bristle every time someone wastes space on "The U".

The Best That Never Was is by far my favorite. It's the only one that has made me have to hold back tears. When Marcus is watching his old high school highlights at the end, it gets to me every time. And when he's on the high school's field and starts talking about Reggie and how he was running for him because he couldn't.

I really enjoy that scene. It's almost like he is seeing them for the first time and realizes just how amazing his abilities were
