We could do two: One on the treatment of the animals and another on the deplorable conditions that the workers go through...

With some of the footage I've personally seen, there's no excuse for what some of the employees do on the job - whether they're standing in 4 feet of manure or not.

Probably because the PETA website covers that base... or Upton Sinclair 100 odd years ago... take your pick

Haven't had a chance to see it, but I believe "Food Inc" discusses the above - this was a documentary also nominated this year.
There was some tugging at the emotions showing animals being lead to the slaughter, but the focus of the movie was much more on the unhealthy and unnatural conditions rather than the inhumane conditions.

They stated in the documentary that the dolphins there have more mercury in them than normal levels found in dolphins, and showed footage of the dumpings in Japan. So it was documented on film. However, since the mercury is not killing the dolphins, but rather disfiguring people who eat unknowingly Japanese mercury-poisoned dolphins , they focused on that. However, if you ever do go to Japan, you should videotape yourself eating that Dolphin Buffet and show that to your one-eyed daughter one day.

You are so transparent. You're problem is that you attach political labels and let them ruin your movies. Anytime something looks like "Save the Trees" or "Save The Whales" you completely dismiss the movie as liberal nut-job PETA-lovin' propaganda even though the subject has legit objectionable merit. OH NOES! GREENPEACE WAS IN THE MOVIE. IT MUST BE A SUBJECT I HAVE TO DISMISS. Learn to think for yourself, buddy. I'm a conservative, too. I just don't let conservative or liberal propaganda think for me or ruin my movies. Good God, you probably hated that revolutionary special effects movie Avatar with that "shock & awe" comment, huh? I'm sure you missed "that Clooney movie", too cuz he's a liberal activist, even though there wasn't an ounce of politics in it.

People in Europe eat a lot of horse. Are they not civilized?
Sure, they eat horses legally in France. But they don't eat horses in the USA or the UK legally. Who's side are you on, traitor? And do you eat horse?

Also, laws can't make something "Taboo" only hippies can.
Jesus, did you really use the "hippie" term? Really? Who still uses that?. Do you still call any Russian "Commies"? I better not buy a Volvo or you'll call me "yuppie". And yes, laws do follow social prohibitions or "taboos", and sometimes precedes them. Incest, for example, was ok for Adam and Eve and their offspring, then became outlawed by Abraham & Moses before it became socially "taboo". Centuries later, we follow those same laws.
Yet somehow, your Mom and Dad/uncle must have missed the memo.

Food, Inc. is 1000 times better than The Cove. Food, Inc. uses facts (not emotions) to get its point across. It's message isn't "Don't eat _______"; instead it's "Be smarter about what you buy and what you put into your body."
Be smarter when you go to Japan and eat that dolphin buffet. You may not want to put that mercury filled filet in your body or you'll have deformed children. Aw, hell: JUST DON'T EAT DOLPHIN!
Dude, if you really got defensive over the possibilty that "Hollywood" may influence people in power who could theoretically take away another liberty (ie: option to eat dolphins in Japan), you have serious problems.

That aggravates the piss out of me. It's driving my replies in this thread because of dismissive numbnuts with keyboards.
Personally, I didn't really care for the documentary cuz of it's pace, even if it sounds like I am defending the hell out of it. I'm not. It was boring, if you ask me. I've seen much better documentaries. It seemed like it was just a short film that was lengthened with filler by an hour or so, until they finally showed the "meat" of the movie over the last 10 minutes.
But their point had merit. Something I've had to hammer home to some nearsighted goofballs.

Freek, I see you have taken offense to my opinions. I cannot address all of your comments so I will only address a few of the standouts:
The movie was set in Japan, where it is legal. Why the anger? I can read....some stuff. Not like hard stuff like you probably read.
Even with one eye she would be able to tell how delicious those dolphins looked.
No...I just really thought that movie sucked.
I'm on the side of whoever eats the most horse. It also looks delicious.
yes
yes
You'd better not
Again, why so angry? Leave Uncle Dad out of this.
So, do you believe everything hippies tell you or is it just this?
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to take my daughter to her pirate try-outs.

Maybe we should move this thread to the food board? all this talk of horse and dolphin is making me hungry.
BTW, if anyone is interested, I saw they have kangaroo meat at Frank's on Airline in the freezer to purchase. Talk about cute and cuddly, someone needs to document that shite

Honestly, dude, my point was that we shouldn't give a crap about the fricking dolphins when there are bigger issues at hand. If people want to eat dolphins, so what?
And that movie WAS about how cute dolphins were and NOT about the people who got sick from Mercury poisoning, which by the way happened in the 50's. Notice how they didn't show any current birth defects from Mercury? If you got anything else out of it, then you saw a different movie than I saw.
I'm not intolerant of most people, but I am intolerant of stupid people. My last post was just poking fun at you because I thought that it was funny that you got so worked up.

why did you even watch the movie?
yeah, I say no one should make a documentary about anything until cancer, aids, and world hunger are all solved. We only care about big issues dammit!!
I know, right? Those public officials who risked their careers by stopping dolphin meat from being fed to the schoolchildren obviously did it because they thought dolphins are cute too.
don't have very high self-esteem do you?

I didn't make the documentary or chose the subject matter. I would have preferred seeing something this year like The Long Way Home, (a Morgan Freeman-narrated docu about the little known tale of the Jews that were freed from concentration camps after WWII, many of whom tragically died on the road back to Poland and wherever else they came from. And even when they got there, there were no homes left. It was like "Ok, you're free!" and they had no food, no money, no transportation, no warm clothes, etc) I prefer historical documentaries over activist/cause related documentaries.
Fact is, there was a cause-related movie made this year about dolphins being slaughtered indiscriminately for mass profit, which included consummation of current obscene levels of poisonous mercury in the meat. The pace was boring to me, but their points were valid. Maybe not to you, but to most people in America, they see dolphins as an ocean version of Lassie, ie: a pet of sorts. I don't think even you would want to see a documentary about Collie's being slaughtered in East Timor for mass profit, and not come away with a sense of horror. Most people consider the killing of pets, including dolphins, abhorrent. But hey, if they want to kill Lassies in east Timor, so what?
As far as bigger issues and the efforts that should have been made by the documentarists (is that a word?) to tackle them, well, I can't help you. I didn't make the documentary. It was their money and their cause. But I'm certain they thought it was a pretty big issue.
quote:
And that movie WAS about how cute dolphins were
I agree
quote:
..and NOT about the people who got sick from Mercury poisoning
They can't be separated. It's a fact that the levels are obscenely high and are currently being consumed by uninformed customers, despite the lack of footage of future deformed children. But to your point, I will agree that it was certainly added to reinforce the main cause of not killing cute oceanic "pets" like visitors pet and swim with at Sea World.
quote:
I'm not intolerant of most people, but I am intolerant of stupid people
I wasn't clear. I meant tolerance as being able to tolerate perceived or outright liberal causes while watching a movie, and not let it spoil your objectivity and/or entertainment. I am positive the creators of this doc have liberal leanings, but I still have the ability to separate that and acknowledge their balls for carrying out their plan in a foreign land and shining a light on practices that most other countries, like America, have banned.
Also, I have a relative who pretty much holds some of the same vastly dismissive views that you have when it comes to films made by "Hollywood Liberals". I blasted away at you when I was hearing her voice. I apologize to you and your Uncle Dad.
