That's what I'm thinking. That they wanted to segue into doing a crossover with another Earth and didn't have the new characters cast and ready to go. So you end with a cliffhanger and get everything in place for the start of the season.
The post credits tease said that they'd come up with a new way to get new supervillains... another Earth?

They didn't say much. Usual thank yous and look forward to next season. But they did say that they came up with a great new way to bring in super-villains (I guess they're tired of the meta-humans from the accident meme as well).

The season finale cliffhanger is a CW thing. Every season finale from Smallvillle was like that.

Problem is, if Thawne is never born, then he didn't kill Barry's mom. The entire timeline should've reset at that point.

Jay Garrick was the original, 1940's Flash. In the early 60's, Barry crossed over into Jay's alternate universe and discovered Earth 2. That led to the multiverse, and unlimited versions of every character.

I figured that is what caused the black hole. Seemed to happen right at the moment Eddie shot himself and Thawne faded out of existence.
Maybe Barry will have to go back in time and save Eddie from suicide.

So Eobard never existing was the reason for the second wormhole??
He had a hand in a whole bunch of things that would need to be "corrected" if he never existed (Barry's mom's death, Wells death, the accelerator being built earlier than If Wells actually created it, no meta-humans, etc...)

But if Thawne hadn't killed Barry's mom, then he never would've been stuck in the past and threatened everyone, and Eddie never would have had to kill himself, so Thawne would never have been erased from history.
Never try and rationalize the events that proceed time travel.
