It sounds like the American version followed the book more closely than the Swedish version did then, fwiw.

Haven't seen the Swedish version, but the end of the movie is very close to the book in this aspect.

IMO the story seems better with her remaining cold and distant in the film.

I thought the way Lisbeth was introduced to the investigation was better in the Swedish version. I also thought the way it was solved was better in the Swedish version.

I liked Craig better as the male lead. The movie was better made; however, that is obviously due to the larger budget.

SPOILERS

i don't know which version i like more (and i only mean movies, as i haven't read the books)

The American Version was much better technically. the lighting, shot selection, and lenses used were vastly superior to the Swedish. Soundtrack was better. Pacing was better. The direction Fincher took Lisbeth and Mikeal was very Americanized.

Little things: i also thought the Anita angle was much weaker (i mean London, really?). the epilogue should have been cut a good deal...the only reason Fincher had to even deal with her getting the money was so she'd come back to Stockholm, solely for the worst scene in the movie...

...which wasn't in the Swedish Version. Lisbeth/Mikeal always struck me as father/daughter-ish, who frick when she wants to get fricked (and this only existed in the first movie, which makes it stronger). the American movies makes their relationship more boyfriend/girlfriend.

the biggest issue was how much better the Swedish version was at showing them work together (and the actual work used to solve the mystery). some of this was technical (showing him scan in the documents and her hacking) and some was characterization (how they worked together. in the American version they exchange how much they like working with each other, when in the movie they just go off to do random things, alone. it was really funny)

i give the nod to the american version, solely b/c the story is overrated as it is (and gets worse in the sequels). the swedish story doing a mediocre/just good story better can only go so far. the technical superiority of the American version does make a big difference, and it makes the movie experience a lot better

Not sure what the consensus is because I haven't read anything past page one but I thought the movie was great. DIdn't read the book but plan to. Great performance by the Mara girl.

i could have handled this movie at 12

there was only 1 really bad scene, and i had seem rap scenes in movies by 12. by 12 i had seen a TREE rape a girl (in Evil Dead)

now could i have handled it at 6? doubtful. i was just starting to watch R-rated movies

I'd say that a large amount of 12 year olds in America should not see the scene that we both witnessed in this movie. Just my own two scene, but i would not want to be a father of a son and especially a daughter and have to explain that entire scene to them. I think you're trying to paint this subject with a broad brush.

I saw my far share of rated R films when i was younger. But, that was because i was an only child. But, i wouldn't say that everyone could handle it.

i feel it is pretty self explanatory. a rudimentary understanding of sex would fill in any gaps

kind of like people cursing any parent who brings any 12 year old to the movie? that's pretty broad

I saw it today and have neither read the book nor seen the Swedish version. I liked it but the graphic scenes were uncomfortable to watch. I also thought the movie could have ended earlier but I suppose they really wanted to follow the book and cover all its contents.
