In the 1990 campaign for US Senate from LA David Duke received 43.51 percent (607,391 votes).

In the 1991 campaign for Governor of the state of Louisiana Duke's 671,009 votes represented 38.8% of the vote.

Pretty scary.

A) Let's not compare any US politician to Hitler. No one in the American political landscape even approaches Hitler's evil.

B) I missed last night's show. When will it be rebroadcast?

C) The Rise was great, as it did a wonderful job of showing how Hitler came to power and how devastated Germany was after WWI. We're partly to blame for the rise of Hitler, as we handicapped the Weimar Republic right out of the blocks, making it sign the Treaty of Versailles, and not the defeated government.

I was wondering the same about The Rise.

I have The Fall on DVR.

I'm torn on this issue. While the citizen's of Germany had to know of some of the horrors of the concentration camps in their towns, what could they do about it? Do you think the town's people could stop the Nazi's?

However, it definitely wasn't the American's, British, or Soviet's fault, so I think it was appropriate that we made the German citizen's clean up the concentration camps.

Loved this one just as much as the "Rise". Once again a statement from a kid I found most interesting about the 6th army being able to take their own lives before the surrendering to the Russians.

Side note: I like when the history channel shows history. Not theories and "what if's" or Secret what does it all mean crap... just give new and intriguing FACTS. K.. I'm done

Don't know when they'll rebroadcast, but both Rise and Fall are available on DVD at History Channel's website.

Rise

Fall

The History Channel finally puts history on in primetime and I finally catch it. I saw some of The Fall last night and it was pretty solid. I LOVE seeing all the old footage.

If I remember correctly, the US never ratified the Treaty of Versailles. The reason was congress thought the damages Germany was required to pay were too punitive. Did the U.S. receive any repirations from Germany for WWI?

We never ratified it not because of the punitive clauses, but because of the League of Nations. The US wanted to go back into its isolationist hole. I'm not sure if we ever received any reparations, but Germany barely paid any of them to anyone.

We actually loaned money to Germany to pay their reparations. When their reparation debt was forgiven, so was their loan debt.

Many Germans at the time were just as anti-Semitic as their leaders. Hell, a lot of Germans blamed the Jews for losing World War I.

Anti-semitism certainly wasn't limited to Germany. It just took the Nazis to envision the Final Solution.

I have no problem with forcing the Germans to clean up the concentration camps. It makes it impossible to deny what occurred there.

No, I know this. Vienna, where Hitler lived for a large portion of his life, was arguably the most anti-semitic place in Europe.

I saw the Rise, but forgot to set dvr for the fall. It doesn't seem to be coming on again anytime soon. Anyone know where I can watch it online other than torrents? TIA

I've been wondering this myself. I saw most of the Fall and was completely blown away by the footage they used. Of course history channel finally shows something truly fascinating and informative and they never air it again.

I missed both the Rise and the Fall. I'm a History Channel nut and I can't believe I missed these. Netflix carries a lot of H channel stuff though.

It must not have enough trucks, monsters or aliens to warrant a replay.

I refuse to condemn entire numbers of Germans for the actions of the military/political elite (and their minions).

I recommend reading T. Sowell's work with regards to German society around that time period. Couple of factoids:

1.) Half of Jewish marriages in Germany were to German gentiles.

2.) When Germany started its military conquests (Sudenland sp?), the general German mood was of silent despair.

The Nazis had Germany by the b#lls. Speak out against the regime like the folks of the White Revolution and you pay the highest price of them all.

Before folks think we're inherently better than others, I recommend reading up on "Ship of Fools."

As far as I'm concerned there was nothing better with the USSR than there was with Nazi Germany. The world back then was seriously devoid of the concept of freedom, even in the U.S.

Listen, I love Germany, my dad is half German, but the German people aren't innocent here. Most of the early violence against Jews and Communists were done by civilian organizations. Post World War 1, the consensus opinion in the German community was that the Jews were to blame for the loss and the revolution. The Antisemitism was around for decades before then as well.

That's true but it doesn't let the Germans off the hook.
