Shane is the most complex character by far. His best friend was as good as dead. He lied to Lori to make it easier for her and then took up with her. (I would say he had a thing for her for a long time. Nothing wrong with that so long as you don't act on it.)
Then Rick shows up and wrecks Shane's plan. Shane starts going over to the dark side, but he and Rick are still good friends, as illustrated by their conversation at the tractor.
