It's down to similar mannerisms, which certainly weren't in the script.
At the risk of sounding pedantic: how do you know that? Screenplays are known to contain tons of extra-textual material besides dialogue. Not only are prompts, tics, expressions, etc. given in the scripts, but the collaborative efforts that exist between actor, director, and producers also bring about improvised detail.

It was the only time I've walked out of DDL film not being surprised by what he could do.
I agree that it wasn't in stark contrast to his other work, but I refuse to treat DDL like a god who is expected to completely transcend his identity in every role that he takes. In fact the roles that propelled him into the peaks of notoriety (besides My Left Foot) were Gangs of New York and TWBB. Other than that many of his portrayals have been subdued and pale in comparison to his more animated, out of body, out of mind performances.
The Age of Innocence, A Room With A View, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Ballad of Jack and Rose -- they are all undistinguished, synonymously vanilla roles, yet they don't take away from his prowess or the overall quality of a film.

He was also pretty good in In The Name of the Father.
