Seems like a random restriction seeing as Burr and Chappelle belong in the top five.

He’s nowhere near my Top 5, but he was absolutely hilarious.
I’m not gonna make a Top 5, but my ‘top 1’ is Rodney Dangerfield.
He was funny and a top-billed comic from the late 1950’s til he died, his MANY films are hilarious, and his comedy clubs launched an outrageous number of some of the best comics ever.

After reading these responses, Joan Rivers qualifies. Seinfield doesn’t

Dangerfield does too. Everyone else is this this thread so far are not funny or too young too qualify.

Redd Foxx, Don Rickles, Rodney Dangerfield, George Carlin, Bob Newhart, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Bill Hicks, and Mitch Hedberg(personal favorite) are in the conversation.
Chappelle and Burr aren't.

Bill Cosby might be my #1. Just because of how long he's willing to stay character for a gag. That America's Dad routine he did while drugging and raping dozens of women was amazing

This my top 5. I’ll order them.
1. Pryor
2. Carlin
3. Dangerfield
4. Chapelle

Carlin
Pryor
Burr
Ron White
The 5th one I'm going to add just because he made it a life mission to entertain the troops in wartime near the front lines:
Leslie Townes "Bob" Hope

These 2 are as worthless as Sam Kinison
they had a few bright spots, but were nowhere near as good as guys with ACTUAL careers
Hedberg is among the most overrated comedians of all time, thanks to the internet. . .and I like him.

I’m not saying they’re 1 and 2 but they avail are in the running for top 10 overall and ARE 1 and 2 alive today.

Andy Kaufman is seriously not on anyone's list? He is one of the greatest comedic minds ever.
My top 5:
Andy Haufman
George Carlin
Richard Pryor
Steve Martin
John Pinette
While Pinette seems to be the odd man out, I seriously love his stand up. "Free Willy" "Italian Restaurant" and "Personal Trainer" are all bits I could list to daily and never get tired of.
For the record, personal favorite comedy bit is Steve Martin's "Christmas Wish". Next is Andy Kaufman's "Underdog".

But this is based on "stand up", not comedic genius
