The reason people are having a hard time following this year isn't because of the plot/story. It's because every episode is so damn bad and boring that it is almost impossible to keep paying attention.
I think you nailed it.

i don't know if this has ever been discussed, but i believe one problem with true detective is the format of the show.
I don't think what is essentially an 8 part miniseries is the best way to deliver a character study. There just isn't enough time to introduce, develop and get the audience to care about all the characters. Or, on the flip-side, maybe a character study could be pulled off in 8 episodes, but definitely not in conjunction with the intricate and deep rooted mystery/murder/conspiracies that surround the investigations of season 1 and 2.
The current format of the show is fine if they would just focus on the mystery in question and not go off exploring the weird and uninteresting backstories of the characters.

I can't follow the storyline. I don't know who they are investigating or why. I don't know why motorcycle gay cop guy is even on the case just because he found the guy dead. The writer has set up WAY too many bad guys in this season. You could argue that everyone is the bad guy. It's just no fun to watch, I find myself staring at my phone throughout the show and only looking up when someone shoots a gun
Remember when all these other A list actors were being talked about for Season 2. Brad Pitt, Jessica chastain, maybe even Sandra Bullock. Well maybe they really wanted to do it, then read the script and said "Hell no".

I can understand everyone not liking this season, but I wouldn't call it garbage. I still look forward to it on Sunday.

This is one of those seasons that will likely be considered excellent after a re watching.
It's pretty clear the plot is one huge jigsaw puzzle where everything is connected.
We, the audience, are given little bits of information at a time and can't even see the big picture forming yet.
I am enjoying the show still but can understand the ADD instant gratification audience being turned off by this show so far.
It reminds me of the Leftovers last year... I thought the show sucked 5 episodes in but I hung in and it was worth it, especially on the re watch. That show was fantastic.

I couldn't imagine rewatching these episodes
Even if episodes 5-8 go to goat status I don't think I will ever be able to rewatch those episodes

Am I the only one paying attention?
No you are not. Those who cannot follow should pay better attention r give up the show. Certainly there is significant drop-off from last season, but it is still the best thing on Sunday night, and one of the few things I will DVR (along with PBS Masterpiece Mystery/Theater).
Christ the negativity ruins the thread (again).

It's a TV show. If you don't like it, move on to something else. It's really counterproductive to bitch about a tv show.

It's a message board. If you don't like people having different opinions from you, go circlejerk elsewhere. It's really counterproductive to bitch about other people bitching.

Season 1 also had the mystique of not knowing whether or not the show was building to something supernatural. Although some (including myself) were disappointed everything turned out to be "real and not as cool as the conspiracy theories",
There is just enough there to leave the possibility that the supernatural elements were actually real. The part that really causes me to still think this is the "vision" that Cole sees as he is entering "Carcosa" to kill the freak. Was that Cole hallucinating or was it an actual portal/gate opening up? What about the birds flocking in the sign of the "king in Yellow". Why did Cole hallucinate in shapes that were in fact connected to the cult? Why did the freak "recognize him" and why did he call him "Little Priest"? Perhaps the old cult was Cthulhu worship and perhaps they were thwarted in their attempts to wake the "King in Yellow" when Cole and Rust killed the freak.
Just saying. If it were true, nobody would believe it anyway.

Just re watched the episode. Enjoyed it better tonight. I thought they were going to jump ahead next week when I first saw the preview but don't believe that to be the case now.
