the whole tournament thing played into his hands, imo. he was used to fighting multiple opponents on the same night.
Right, and for someone to find it utterly retarded, you would have to assume Brendan did not get any better at fighting from the time he was mediocre to the present day. The movie simply doesn't show us this, but its possible he learned to be a better fighter in the interim.

Just finished watching. I want to run through walls right now and solve physics questions.

The older brother's story was stupid. It'd be like Kbeezy suddenly becoming one of the best MMA fighters in the world because he couldn't afford his house payments.
I don't think it was trying to say he was the best in the world. I was just the perfect storm for him to win, plus the whole "any given night" thing.
You play the same March Madness tournament 10 times and you will likely get 8-10 different national champs. And probably 2 or 3 of those will be low seeds.

That format would have made it even more difficult on the least athletic fighter, and in order for him to beat all of those guys consecutively one would have to assume that at the very least he had become one of the world's best fighters.
I think the mid thirty to early forty year olds on here defend his story so vehemently because they identify with him.
