I never watched this back in the day but finally got around to it last night. I liked the premise and setting, but the stupidity of characters took me out of it. I don't think I've ever seen a dumber and less competent pair of in a horror movie that wasn't intentionally campy.

Thought it was a good setup, just terribly executed.

I love it. But there are definitely a few times when you get irate with the main characters and struggle to feel sorry do them.

Spoilers.

One of the most egregious is when he shoots their friend. Just everything about that was stupid. Why would you not speak if you’re the friend. Or wait to see what you’re shorting at if you’re the main dude? Just idiocy all around.

I literally couldn't believe it. They could have stood in the middle of the living room with the shotgun and been fine. Hell, they could have just slowly walked the road to town with the shotgun and been fine, because in either situation if the very average people with KNIVES approached them they could just blast them. They had so many shotgun shells.

They routinely made the absolute worst decisions and had zero awareness and let people sneak up on them in dead silence.

What? It's one of the greatest horror movies of all time, IMO and here's why:

There's no portal to hell with demons streaming out of it. There are no levitating pre-teens needing an ancient god cast out. No flying witches or Eldritch horrors.

Just three masked people causing mayhem.

Not only is it loosely based on real events, it could happen today for one simple reason.

"Because you were home."

Agree with everything. I just rewatched it last week and it's still incredibly unnerving. I've got to admit though The Golden God getting blown away with that shotgun always makes me laugh

Look the setup is great, just like I said. But the characters being that terribly stupid took me out of it. Not to mention the antagonists moving like a combination of the Flash and a ninja.

Yeah, the premise is amazing. Also the masked killer in a completely empty house sneaking perfectly silently behind the friend who somehow developed the worse tunnel vision ever in a clearly ransacked house was just beyond the pale.

If people did logical things in horror movies, they'd outsmart the Big Bad(s) 90% of the time and it would just be a thriller.

It's like if people did reasonable things like think a matter through, or communicate with their spouses/friends in sitcoms. Nothing would be funny and the plot would be resolved in about 7 mins.

a movie like House of the Devil does all this but 100x better

the horror in the strangers has nothing to do with what the characters are experiencing. It is only the viewer. They are just looking in the windows or whatever solely for the viewer to see.

Then by the time the characters are aware they have access to a shotgun and the same weapons the villains have. They are useless so they die. I don't feel bad for them

Very extremely loosely. I think someone once knocked on the writer’s door and asked for someone who didn’t live there.

The Strangers
I still check outside before going to bed. . .and it is 100% because of this movie

The reality that shite similar to this HAS HAPPENED AND WILL HAPPEN AGAIN just gets me to my core "family protector"

Slasher films, ghost stories, etc don't scare me a bit

Realistic horror (home invasion flicks, Speak no Evil, shite like Hostel) fricking gets me.

One thing I learned in martial arts. . .just because you have all the tools, doesn't mean you are the guy who can use them when they are needed

It isn't fight or flight, It is fight, flight, or freeze

so many freeze
